Arizona Man Stung to Death by Bees

On Sunday in Arizona a man was found covered with bees. This man's name was Epigmenio Gonzalez and he was 51 years old. The bees came out of a couch that he was trying to clean. They had situated their hive inside the couch and he was trying to get them out when they became agitated. This all happened around 6:30 p.m. and he wasn't the only one injured. There was also a women in the house who was stung and had to be taken to the hospital. The officials on the scene had to spray the bees off of the man with water before they could take him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Several of the officials were stung as well but they didn't have to be treated.

1. If you had to clean a beehive out of a couch, what would you do differently than him to make sure this didn't happen?

If I was in this situation I would probably have someone there to call 9-11 just incase something like this happened. I might even just have someone who is trained do it for me because I don't want to get stung by a bee. I think the smart thing that you could do is have some bug spray on you as well.

2. If you were a police officer who arrived at this scene, what would you do to help improve the situation?

I think I would try to get the bees off of him for starters. After that I would try to see if he was alright and if he is allergic to bees. If he's allergic I would do everything in my power to get him to the closest hospital and fast but then again I'd do that if he wasn't allergic too just incase.

  • Good job overall! You should have continued replying throughout the week.

  • I would be careful in cleaning the couch to make sure that I wasn't making any animals hiding in the couch agitated or anything. I hate bees and would not want to get attacked by one. If I were a police officer, I would check the house for any other bee hives that might be a threat.

  • Well first of why would you have a couch with bees in it. Second of all I would just not clean it out I would just throw the thing into a pit of fire where it belongs. I would call for back up and maybe spray him with raid to kill the bees and tell him proper bee protocol so he does not sustain and further injuries

  • If I had known that the couch was filled with a beehive, I would wear proper equipment that would allow me not to get stung. If I were a police officer, I would make sure that everyone on the scene is safe and clear from the area.

  • I would wear very protective clothing to do it or have a professional like a bee keeper do it. I would help him get all the bees off of him. I would try to get them off as quickly as possible to prevent casualties like what happened to this man. I would take him to the nearest hospital as fast as I could.

  • I would totally wear some protecting clothes as the bees might sting. I think the man was careless because he knew there was a hive there and could have easily avoided his own death. I would first make sure the bees are gone and Know where everything is.

  • I probably would have had a bee keeper do it for me since they are trained and they have all the equipment and they would not get stung. If I were a police officer I would try to clear everyone from the infected area and if anyone was injured I would try and get them to somewhere safe.

    • I would totally do what you said; I would have had a beekeeper since he knows what to do and is an expert in situations like that so he would have the right clothes and equipment. I would have also tried to protect everyone in the place with help from someone that knows how to deal with that.

  • I would have probably got some one that knows how to handle bees properly or use water or something to make it so they couldn't fly at me and sting me. If I was one of the police officers that arrived at the scene i would have got a perfesional bee keeper to come in and take care of the bees.

    • I agree with you, I would have probably asked someone that knows what to do in situations like that so they could help me since they are a professionals. If I was one of the officers would have also called a bee keeper to back me up in that situation.
