Are you a Smartphone Addict?

Erica Krepow is a 23-year-old who works as a retail associate in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Each night when she gets into bed she plugs her iPhone into her charger and sets it next to her pillow. Erica does not turn her phone off, she keeps it on full volume. For about 30 minutes Erica scrolls through social media until she gradually falls asleep. She says it helps her fall asleep because it makes her eyes tired.

There was a new survey taken by more than 2,000 adults. Here is what the survey showed: 93% of them use their phones while in bed, 80% of them use their phones while in the bathroom and 43% of them use it while stopped at a red light. Nearly half of the people in the survey agreed that they would be happier if they used their phone less.

Like Erica, I use my phone until I fall asleep at night. Once I am ready for bed I set it on my night stand and then fall asleep. I think I would be happier if I would manage the time I use my phone. My phone is in my hand all the time and there is always something that I am doing with it. I think I need to spend less time on my phone and not procrastinate as much as I do sometimes.

People with phones: How often are you on your phone? Are you able to manage the time you on your phone well? Why or why not? What would you do if you did not have your phone?

People without phones: If you do not have a phone, what is it like? Do you want a phone? Why or why not?

  • Well done once again!

  • I'm on my phone quite a bit. I think i can manage my time on my phone well because I only use my phone at home. If i didn't have a phone I would probably be bored

  • I am on my phone quite a bit but not nearly as much as a majority of the population. I can manage to do things without my phone in sight. I think managing my time on my phone isn't necessary because I usually have so much time that I'm not on it that much until my down time.

  • I am on my phone basically whenever I am not busy. Once I begin to look at my phone, I sometimes find it hard to stop. If I didn't have my phone, I would probably spend a lot more time with my family and outside of my room.

  • I don't think that using your phone in bed or the bathroom means that you are addicted to it, but if you need your phone so much that you're going to impair your driving with it, then you might have a problem.

    • I know, it didn't say that meant you were addicted to it. I didn't mention in my paragraphs that it is not good to fall asleep to your phone at night.
  • I am only on my phone for scheduling purposes and transporting my siblings everywhere, but other than that I don't use my phone a whole lot. I think I am able to manage my time on my phone well, but most of the time I would spend on my phone transfers to other devices at home, like a computer, television, or a gaming console. If I didn't have my phone communication would be a bit more stressful but it could still be done.

    • It sounds like you manage your time well with your phone. I think it would be difficult to communicate without a phone too.

  • I dont have a phone and im just fine but it just is hard sometimes to contact people that I want to talk to and you dont get on social medias as much as some people. Yes I would love a phone because then it will be easyer to contact people and then I could get on more social medias.

    • I bet that is tough trying to communicate with people. Also there is a lot on social media that people talk about sometimes, so that would be difficult to have a conversation about if you did not know anything abut it.
