Many of you probably haven’t heard of Texas’ Castle Doctrine Law. One story including this law is when a San Antonio woman home alone with her three sleeping kids when she heard an intruder break into her house. She then proceeded to grab her gun and shoot twice, hitting the intruder, Roman Rodriguez once in the chest. When the police came later they found Rodriguez sitting in a chair in the backyard of the same house he broke into, he later died from gunshot wounds on the way to the hospital.

The Texas law permits this because it is self defense. In December of 2020 the Texas governor Greg Abbott tried passing a law stating that “It would require a homeowner to exhaust the potential of safely retreating farther into their home.” That introduced bill was fastly shut down. In a later tweet Abbott tweeted stating “The Castle Doctrine will not be reduced. We won’t force Texas homeowners to retreat.” He goes on in the same tweet saying how homeowners need to be protecting themselves especially will all the “Crazy ‘defund police’ ideas.”

This law also applies to Iowa. In a more exact statement “Iowa allows the use of deadly force when it is believed necessary to protect one’s self or others from injury or death.” Some are wanting to get rid of, or reduce this law so you cannot move straight to violence right away when you're in danger. The reductions of the law could make it so in court you, or the homeowner could get in trouble and have some murder charges for defending your own property. Personally I think this law is amazing just the way it is. I think it would be really dumb to take away peoples rights to defend themselves.

Do you think this law should stay the same? Why or Why not?

Do you think there should be restrictions on gun laws?

Do you think the Texas mother was in the right?

    • That is a good point I forgot about the second ammendment.

  • I think it is more beneficial to keep gun laws the same as they already are. I believe that the problem comes from the actual purchase of the firearm. If we put stricter requirements or did background checks, I feel like there would be way more safety with guns.

  • I think that guns laws are fine as they are except that there should be closer resticions when you go to buy a gun. The background checks should be more thourough and we should just teach alot more gun safety because right now it is not taught alot widely.

    • I agree, there are some people in the world who would be super dangerous if they owned a gun, but unfortunetly the world isn't perfect.

  • I think that the gun and self defense laws should stay the way that they are right now. I think that he restrictions that we have on guns right now are good enough, and I don't think they should be any more strict.

  • I think that gun laws should stay the same. I definitely do not think they should be stricter but I don't think they should be less strict. I think that the Texas mother did the right thing. She was just protecting her house from the invator.

  • I think that the gun law should stay the same because the right to defend yourself is garunteed in the 2nd amendment, if you eliminate this law then that would change not only the counstitution, but change a large part of American culture. I think if someone istrying to hurt you and your own or damage/steal your property you should be able to defend yourself and whats yours.

    • I agree, it is kind of an American right in my opinion.

  • In my opinion I do think that the gun law should stay the same as it is something that is very crutical for people to be able to defend themselves. Escpecially if someone is breaking into your house there should be a way to defend yourself if someone is invading your property.

  • I think that the gun law should stay the same because it is very important for everyone to have the right to defend themselves. I think if someone is breaking into your house and causing violence I think you should be able to do whatever to keep yourself protected.
