Are Energy Drinks Becoming a Problem?

As most people know, energy drinks are becoming more and more popular. Not only are teens drinking them but a majority of adults are too. Some side effects include high blood pressure, hyperactivity, etc.

Researchers did a questionnaire at two emergency departments from June 2011 - June 2013. They surveyed people from ages 12 to 18. Out of the 612 people that responded, 33% said they drank energy drinks frequently. Among those teens, 76% said they had a headache in the last six months, 47% said they experienced anger and 22% stated they had difficulty breathing. While they can’t prove that’s from the energy drinks. They stated that the people who consumed the energy drinks were more likely to report symptoms then those who didn’t. At the same time, people who consumed them were more likely to say the drinks helped them do better in school or in sports. They also said the drinks helped them focus and stay up all night.

I drink energy drinks sometimes but very rarely. I don’t drink them frequently and I don’t seem to have any symptoms that others reported. But, I do feel more energized and focused when I drink energy drinks

Do you think energy drinks are becoming an issue?

Do you drink energy drinks?

If so, do you see any symptoms?

    • I agree that they’re only really bad if you drink so many at a time. Because that’s a lot of sugar to intake at a time.

    • I agree with the fact that it is from caffine withdarwls. I just had a caffine headache a couple weeks ago because I drink coffee every morning and that morning I ran out of time to make it so I had a headache because I didn't have the caffine.

  • I think that for some people they are becoming an issue if you are drinking several per day. I have energy drinks every once in a while, like one per week at the absolute most. When I have them I noramally don't have any symptoms unless  I am really tired, then I might feel energized for maybe an hour, but normally no symptoms.

    • I agree that it’s okay to drink them so often. Drinking them constantly on the other hand is an issue.

  • I think that energy drinks are drank way too often. I see the benefits to them because you can stay up longer and get more work done, but I feel they are more of a once and a while drink, not an everyday drink. I have never drank an energy drink, so I do not know the symptoms.

  • I drink them somewhat often and I don't really have any issues other than I've had headaches more frequently. I've always had a problem with migraines, but drinking energy drinks makes me focused and energized until they end of the day; then I get a headache where my eyes are sensitive to light. I think it just works different for people with certain health problems. There are people who drink like 4 everyday and aren't even affected. I guess it just depends.

    • I agree. I think it definitely depends on the person drinking them.

  • I can see how energy drinks can become an issue if you drink them all the time, but it all depends on what kind you get. I do drink energy drinks sometimes and have not experienced any of the symptoms, also when I do drink energy drinks I also feel the same way I felt before them. So I don't think they really affect me.

  • I think that people that drink them a lot will get issues and if they put a limit to themselves then they wouldnt have issues.Yes, I do drink energy drinks, but not all the time its rare once in a while. I have never got any of those symtoms before and I have never felt that way.

    • I agree, drinking them constantly is an issue. I rarely drink them and I haven’t seen any symptoms as well.
