Are Energy Drinks Becoming a Problem?

As most people know, energy drinks are becoming more and more popular. Not only are teens drinking them but a majority of adults are too. Some side effects include high blood pressure, hyperactivity, etc.

Researchers did a questionnaire at two emergency departments from June 2011 - June 2013. They surveyed people from ages 12 to 18. Out of the 612 people that responded, 33% said they drank energy drinks frequently. Among those teens, 76% said they had a headache in the last six months, 47% said they experienced anger and 22% stated they had difficulty breathing. While they can’t prove that’s from the energy drinks. They stated that the people who consumed the energy drinks were more likely to report symptoms then those who didn’t. At the same time, people who consumed them were more likely to say the drinks helped them do better in school or in sports. They also said the drinks helped them focus and stay up all night.

I drink energy drinks sometimes but very rarely. I don’t drink them frequently and I don’t seem to have any symptoms that others reported. But, I do feel more energized and focused when I drink energy drinks

Do you think energy drinks are becoming an issue?

Do you drink energy drinks?

If so, do you see any symptoms?

  • I think they could possibly cause problems but I have never had an issue with them. I have only had a couple ever and I find that the only time I will drink one is when I need that exrta boost of energy. I think some people are becoming to reliant on them so they need one everyday so that they aren't a wreck, so I think people shouldn't drink them that often.

  • I do drink energy drinks. However, I rarely drink them. I oonly drink them on certain occasions. I have experienced headaches, but I do not think that they are influenced by my caffeine intake. Headaches are truly the only symptom that I experience.

  • I think for some people they're but I don't know because what you said with the percentages of kids dealing with cetain things from drinking energy drinks it does hurt them which is an issue. I do drink energy drinks but I don't drink them every single day. I don't have any symptoms because I don't drink energy drinks enough at least I don't think to get symptomes.

    • I agree if you don’t drink energy drinks often, you probably won’t see symptoms.

  • I think that they could become an issue if people start using them too often but other than that I think they're preety safe. I've tried them a few times but I didin't really like the ones that I've tried so I don't consume them regularly. I think that you can see symptoms only on people who drink them daily or very often.

    • I agree. I think most people who don’t drink them very often won’t see symptoms.

  • I don't think that energy drinks are a big issue. Sure some people are addicted to them but others rarley drink them and only when they need energy. I drink energy drinks every once in a while when I need energy to get me through the day. I don't have any symptoms when I drink them.

  • I dont think that energy drinks are a problem. It might be for people who only drink energy drinks. But sometimes people just need one to get through their day.

  • I think that energy drinks are not an issue at all. I get that if you drink a ton that isn't good for you but if not I do not think they are a problem. I drink energy drinks often and i've never had any issues. I think they can be beneficial because they give you energy.

  • I think that energy drinks will only be an issue if you drink them all the time. People are getting these symptoms from caffine withdrawels, which is normal. The whole issue with energy drinks is the amount of sugar and chemicals in them. I drink energy drinks every so often, but I've never experienced these symptoms as I don't drink caffine.
