Are Energy Drinks Becoming a Problem?

As most people know, energy drinks are becoming more and more popular. Not only are teens drinking them but a majority of adults are too. Some side effects include high blood pressure, hyperactivity, etc.

Researchers did a questionnaire at two emergency departments from June 2011 - June 2013. They surveyed people from ages 12 to 18. Out of the 612 people that responded, 33% said they drank energy drinks frequently. Among those teens, 76% said they had a headache in the last six months, 47% said they experienced anger and 22% stated they had difficulty breathing. While they can’t prove that’s from the energy drinks. They stated that the people who consumed the energy drinks were more likely to report symptoms then those who didn’t. At the same time, people who consumed them were more likely to say the drinks helped them do better in school or in sports. They also said the drinks helped them focus and stay up all night.

I drink energy drinks sometimes but very rarely. I don’t drink them frequently and I don’t seem to have any symptoms that others reported. But, I do feel more energized and focused when I drink energy drinks

Do you think energy drinks are becoming an issue?

Do you drink energy drinks?

If so, do you see any symptoms?

  • I think they become a issue for people who think they absolutely need them in order to get through the day. I myself drink energy drinks often but not often enough to experience syptoms. Back in middle school, there was a time period where I was addicted to them and had to drink at least two a day in order to not experience withdrawals or other nasty symptoms.

  • I think that energy drinks may be becoming an issue because of the side effects they cause. Obviously, you should consume everything in moderation, but sometimes it can get out of control. I don't drink energy drinks because I don't have a need to and to avoid growing an addiction to them.

  • I do drink energy drinks pretty frquently, just because im not the biggest fan of coffee. I found myself depending on them for school alot so I stopped. I would get super hyper in school until around 6th hour then I would be dead the rest of the day. I do think that if you drink them constantly then it would be a huge health issue.

    • I agree that they are a good alternative to coffee, unless you overdrink them.

  • I do drink energy drinks frequently, but haven't had one in a couple of weeks. I didn't really see any symptoms when I was drinking them, besides just feeling a little bubbly than normal, other than that I felt completely normal. I think that they could become a problem, for people with health problems it could possibly make there problems worse.

    • I agree that it will become a problem. Especially people with health conditions.

  • I think that they can be an issue to a certain degree. I drink energy drinks when I feel that they would be beneficial. I have drank one stayed up all night, I did all my homework that I needed to do and went to school just fine and I was not fatigued at all.

    • I agree, they are a problem on some terms. On others, they are beneficial.

  • I think that energy dirnk are only a issue if you drink them every day if you have like one a week i think that you will be fine. I only drink energe drinks on the weekends and i have like one a week. i think most people do drink them. I have also never had a symptom of any health issues.

  • I have an energy drink every day. Whether it's an iced coffee, monster or redbull, I have at least one per day. When I have to work, I'll have another. I think it's bad to have another during the end of the day. I think it could be an issue, because I can't seem to leave my house without grabbing a drink.
