Apartheid V.S. U.S. Segregation

Apartheid, and the segregation of the U.S are very similar, but are still different. Apartheid was a policy/ system that the African government put into place to make whites superior (much like in the U.S.) the difference is that the U.S. brought the African Americans over. In Apartheid the colored people were native to Africa, but they were still being discriminated against even thought there was more black citizens than white. Another similarity is that there were many restrictions on colored people such as education, transport, public spaces, etc. In Africa they took it a step further; instead of not allowing blacks to enter certain establishments, they were not allowed to enter certain areas that were known as white districts without proper papers. A reason that both were different is that in apartheid it was illegal to have a mixed child, but in the U.S. it was only frowned upon. Lastly, they both had very powerful leaders to put an end to these rasist ways. In America it was Marther Luther King Jr, and in Apertheid it was Nelson Mandela. Apartheid and the U.S. segregation were both very harsh times in the worlds history, but many of us do not know of apartheid. To learn more click here.

Did you know anything about apartheid before reading the paragraph above? If not would you be interested in learning more?

I learned about apartheid after reading a memoir about a child who was born in Africa during those awful times. His name is Trevor Noah(The Daily Show's host) his dad is German while his mother is a Blavk African. He was born a crime. If you would like to read his memoir it is titled Born a Crime.

  • Great topic choice and good job replying. I do think you could have expaned a bit more on your summary as one paragraph is a bit brief overall.

  • not to mention apartheid was very very grusome, christian nationalism was more prominent for white people in classrooms, while limited education for poc had caused them to get into cheap labor, making them not belive they were at the same intellegince as any white person. i feel like america should focus on what poc are saying, and genuinely listen. if they are saying something is wrong here, don't oppress them more, listen and be open minded.

  • That is truly a terrible things and it pains me to see that we didnt learn about it. I think that we should have learned about segregation world wide and not just U.S.A. because it is widespread and still very much a problem. Ever country has atleast a form of racism, present or past.

  • I didn't know anything about apartheid before reading this post; in fact I've never even heard of apartheid until now. I don't know if I would take the time to learn more about this in my free time, however if someone told me facts or information about it I would gladly listen and learn more.

  • No, I didnt know anything before this and in not really to interested in learning more about it because it doesnt seem like somethign that would interest me very much. I also didnt know thoes thing about trevor whos show i have watched before and enjoyed.

    • I understand that it doesn't intrest you, but I think that it is important to know that segragation didn't just happen in the U.S. it happened in a part of the world where we least expected it. If you ever whould like to learn alttle more in a quick fun way you could watch the youtube video Trevor made with his gran.

  • I also have never heard of Apartheid before this. But I think it needs to be brough up more in school and colleges, We should know that if somone is not in a minority they can still be descrimanated againts. And that is pretty sad. Hopefully this gets brought up more.

    • I agree with you this topic needs to be brought up more. I believe that this is an important subject in our world history. if this were to be something we talk about in school would you acctually be willing to learn more about it.? for me I would because I find it very intresting.

  • I had never heard of apartheid before reading this, and I think that it should be mentioned more in our education systems. I think it's very important that we know that even in a situation where someone is not a minority, they can still be discriminated against. I wonder why we are never taught about this?

    • Tha is exactly my question. I would love to have this taught to us in school. I also think that it is an important to know about this. I think it is crazy how the minority of the pop. controled the majority of the people, and more importantly they controled the native people.
