Another Ferguson Case?

On October 8th in St. Louis an 18 year old male, Vonderrit D. Meyers,  was shot and killed by a police officer, but at the time of the shooting the police officer was off-duty. Voderrit's mother has claimed that when the shooting occurred her son was unarmed and the only thing that he had in his possession was a sandwich that he was holding at the time but the St. Louis Police have a different story, they have said that Vonderrit began shooting at the officer and so the off-duty police officer fired back in response. Because it is still unclear what actually happened, there is a lot of controversy surrounding the death of Vonderrit. Many people have begun protesting and are very upset with the killing of Vonderrit. The case is also being compared to what happened in Ferguson not too long ago.

My questions for you are what do you think really happened? Do you think there will be as big of an uproar as there was in Ferguson? Do you think that there is an issue with police officers abusing their power? What are your thoughts on whole situation in general?

  • Great job!!

  • It's impossible to tell but it has been happening a lot lately i don't know if its either the cops fault or the people the cops feel threatened by.

    • Yeah I agree, it seems like it's been happening a lot recently!

  • I don't really know what happened it's hard to say when there's two completely different parts of the story. And I think it might get just as bad because this type of thing has happened more now, so people are going to get more and more upset about it. And yes I do think that some police are abusing their power. I think that cops should have to wear cameras so that there's not controversy about situations.

    • I agree, I think more people are going to get upset, especially considering what happened in Ferguson. Hopefully they can figure out a way to better prevent cases like this.

  • Can't tell what really happened because you can't trust anyone. Depends how people take it could be. I think there is an issue with police abusing there power but only some not all. I think we need to get to the bottom of it and see if we get the real story.

    • I agree! It's hard telling what actually happened but hopefully they can get it figured out and try and find ways to prevent situations like this from happening.

  • I would also like to agree with Maggie because too many cases of this are happening and it is getting outrageous.

  • I think that he was innocent and he was minding his own business. If you would've asked me what happened before the Ferguson shooting I would've said that he responded in self defense but more and more cases like this pop up. I think that there will be a large uproar because of this happening so often anymore. I think that police officers have always abused their power since there ever was the police it is human nature. I think that it is sad that someone could just take someone's life and not feel bad about it and possibly like doing it.

    • I agree, the more cases like the that happen, the more you question what all goes on with situations like this.
