On June 30th in Pius XII stadium in Maranhao, northeastern Brazil, referree Otavio Jordao da Silva expelled a 31 year old player from an amateur match of soccer. The name of the man expelled is Josemir Santos Abreu. Abreu was so upset that we took Silva and threw him to the ground. While Silva was trying to get up, he stabbed Abreu in the chest. When Abreu was on his way to the hospital, he died. After stabbing a player, Silva was charged by numerous spectators and players. A man named Souza tied him up by his arms and legs while a man hit him over the head with a spike and broke a bottle on his face. Then, a man nicknamed "Pirolo" used the same knife that Silva used to stab Abreu to stab Silva in the neck. And to make it worse, Souza's brother, Francisco, used a sickle to cut off Silva's arms, legs, and head. Shortly after the took Silva's head and placed it on a stake in the middle of the field.

This is one of the grossest, most violent stories I've ever heard. What would you do if you were Silva? Why do you think he was carrying a knife in the first place? Why do you think so many people had weapons there in the first place? What do you think they should do so this doesn't happen again?

  • Interesting story and well done!

  • Yea, he probably was using the knife in self defense against Abreu after being attacked by him.

  • Well, that escalated quickly. That is just stupid, it is just a game, and 2 people died.

  • The refs need body gaurds, soccer fans are nuts in other countries, he had  the knife becase he was planning it probally

    • If he was planning it, authorities might find a lead on the fact that he might have planned it since he already had the knife. There could have been a lot more behind him just kicking a player out of the game.

  • If I was Silva I would have not be carrying a knife or killed that man. Maybe they had weapons for protection. I think they should check everyone for weapons before they enter the stadium.

  • I'm not sure why he would have a knife on him as he was just a referee. This situation escalated quickly and all over a game... I think they need to check for weapons on people entering the stadium to prevent something like this happening again.

  • Why would you have knife on the field in the first play? They need to have more security so it doesn't happen again.

  • holy cow that is almost to crazy to believe and I would probably just make sure that I was never a soccer ref.

  • That is nasty. I don't know why he would be carrying a knife on the field, that doesn't really make sense. Were there authorities at this game that tried to stop this?
