Android spy app lands student creator in federal prison

A Carnegie Mellon student pleads guilty to creating and selling malicious software that gives the user open access to android owners smartphones. This app gives the user the power to access to the camera of a Android owner allowing the hacker to spy and watch the victim. The college student was also apart of the take down of a large global black market hacking website called Darkode.com which is now taken down. Darkode.com is known for its buying and selling of illegal hacking software including the spy app. "I am sorry to the individuals to whom my software may have compromised their privacy," Culbertson said after pleading guilty, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Culbertson faces up to 10 years in prison for his offenses and a fine of up to $250,000 when he is sentenced on December 2nd of this year. Culbertson is also in trouble for creating software that infects peoples home computers and kills there files. He is also being charged with aiding online break ins. What do you think of technology today and the power of someone who can create these devious apps and soft-wares? I think technology is the most powerful weapon in the world and should be more controlled on the civilian level. not saying that the internet should be ban but there should be much more government monitoring.

What could the government do more of to keep websites and apps like these from being created?

  • Good job Spencer!

  • I agree with almost everybody on this post, this was a very cruel thing to do. It's just amazing the things people can do now and days from their basement....One thing is, I'm not sure the Gov. could help a lot in a situation like this unless they have control over every phone in the world. Obviously, that can't happen. I think, hopefully, there are creators creating apps that block things like this.

  • I think he should watch it more and get the victims that are doing that to people cause its not right on there half to be doing that. I would be creep out and i think the world should start thinking of what they are doing and watch what they do with there phones and the internet. i think the president should watch for that or someone should.

  • Yeah Emma that's where it is probably hard for the government and there monitoring. on one side you have people shopping online and going on social media and on the other we have hackers and black market websites selling illegal apps and software being used to damage other peoples technology. I also agree with the fact that the government really needs to step up its monitoring of the enternet and apps and i think the government knows this and is starting to take more actions.

  • I totally agree kara it is the most powerful thing out there and the government is totally being outsmarted because if they weren't this problem wouldn't exist.

  • I kind of agree Devin I would say that there are some security issues but I think they need to come up with a system of monitoring the creation of apps. I think all apps should have to be confirmed and deemed safe and legal by the company owning the online e-store that will be advertising and selling the app. But i think the responsibility of the monitoring falls under the company that is selling the app not the government.

  • I think that people have definitely outsmarted the government.  I feel like the more the government tries to do, the more people will try and break the laws.  I think that all that the government can do is monitor things and make sure they don't get out of hand.  Technology is one of the most powerful things out there, anyone can do anything to anyone!

  •  I think technology of today is great because you can communicate faster and you can shop without having to leave home. But the internet is also a big weapon in the way that people can use to create haciking programs and steal peoples identities. I think the government should create stricter polices and should devote more time to monitoring the internet for threats like this.

  • There is not enough security to watch and monitor every person who creates these sort of apps so the government either needs to have 24 hour monitoring or ban any devices with the ability to create apps. I know that's a stretch for people who have smart phones but it might be the only other way. We have advance in technology way to fast anyway.

  • Yeah but the government can ban some internet formats and softwares that could be a huge shortcut in the war against hacking. Its just like the school and spotify, not everyone in the school was doing wrong with spotify but for the special few who had to break the rules they ruined it for all the users. If that makes sense.
