Greta Thunberg Is a 16-year old girl from the nation of Sweden. Over the past year, Greta has been making headlines for her devotion to the fight for climate change. Greta recently spoke at the United Nations Climate Action summit on behalf of young people everywhere. Her speech was truly moving and brought many to tears with her jarring question, "How dare you?". The speech helped turn the heads of world leaders everywhere and put many powerful people on the spot. Ms. Thunberg started her journey by protesting her demands for immediate climate change outside of her nations parliment when she was only 15-years old.

Recently, Greta Thunberg has been a large name in the world of politics and has decided to visit places all over the world. One of the places Greta has chosen to visit for a disccusion on her views on climate change is our humble state of Iowa. Her visit was held in Iowa City, Iowa and many were exhilarated to have such a progressive activist in their small town, but some were not so inviting. A chemistry teacher from Waterloo commented that he would not be attending the rally since he did not "have my rifle". The comment was considered by the school to be one of violent and innapropriate nature for someone of their administration. There is still an investigation pending on wether or not the teacher will be allowed back into the district or not. Many parents and students have been quick to put their inputs in. Many say the motivation behind his comment is of terroristic context, while others seem to be defending him.

Do you think what this school teacher said was over the top, or are people being too sensitive?

I think the teacher's comment was fueled by exessive political beliefs and that he should have thought twice before saying something that could be associated with such negative connotations. I do think the school was right for putting him on leave and I think that people with such innapropriate thoughts and lack of self-control like him should not be allowed to teach.

Do you believe climate change is a pending issue? If so, how do you think world leaders today could fix such problems?

Climate change is an extremely large issue in our modern society. We can see the effects of our carbon footprints all over the earth. Weather is becoming more extreme, Ice caps that haven't changed in millenia are melting, and entire ecosytems are collapsing. World leaders must act now and reform their energy plans to become cleaner and more efficient for our changing world.

    • Im sorry but your comment is somewhat confusing to me. I get that you think people are being dramatic and over-sensitive but what do you mean when you say "that's for him and him only."? Because everything you post on social media, other people can see, you realize that right? So no it is not "for him and him only" I also think its very ignorant to say that if we don't even try to stop climate change, it won't be a problem for the next generation. Do you realize if we don't stop it now the problems the next generation has to endure will be on a magnitude the likes of which our society hasn't even seen yet? Coastal cities will flood and droughts could last decades and extreme weather could destroy our agricultural industry. So in conclusion I think if you inform yourself on world issues like these you may think twice about your views on climate change.

  • I think the teacher was being over the top, he shouldn't have said that considering how real gun deaths in the US are, but part of it is people being sensitive. I believe climate change is definitely an issue, many scientists have confirmed it, and I think world leaders can fix problems by stopping production of plastic and switching to clean energy as soon as possible.

    • I agree that gun violence in this country is becoming increasingly familiar in schools and public settings and its getting really concerning to think thats a big problem, and I can understand why you would see that some people are over exaggerating and making the situation bigger than It maybe really should have been.

  • I believe that what the teacher said was way over the top. She is just a girl who wants to see her world change to better. There is no reason to threaten her. I believe climate change is a very big issue today. I believe all of the world leaders could fix this problem. If they all worked together to ban plastics, animal species and their homes could be saved. All of the extremely wealthy people could fix our world problems if they just donated their money. People could also volunteer and donate to help save our Earth and decrease climate change.

    • I agree with you that the teacher should have thought through and considered how his comment could possibly have come off to other people considering it was about guns and a young teenage girl in a political setting. Climate change needs to be fixed soon and we all need to help and the extreme wealth of the world would be a big contributor.

  • I agree that the teacher was being fueled by political thoughts and should have just been quiet about his thoughts. He really did need to be put on leave because what he said was way over the top and unneeded. Climate change is a large issue that we need to face, especially in modern society and the worlds political leaders need to advocate for a change and start figuring out new ways to change so the world won't collapse from climate change.

    • I think that the political views of teachers should just be kept to themselves since they are a major influence to todays youth especially since they are supposed to be rolemodels. Climate change is such a big issue and its nice to see other people are just as concerned about it as I am and we need to figure out ways to stop it soon.

  • The teacher definitely should have thought before he spoke. Nobody should say such a thing, but since he is a professional and an influence on children, his comment is disgusting. The school made the best decision, and if I were them, I wouldn't let the teacher come back. Climate change is a big issue and steps need to be taken now instead of leaving it to the younger generations and calling it our problem even though we had nothing to do with the start of it.

    • NO teacher should be commenting about their political beliefs especially when its about guns on social media. IF the teacher could have thought through his post a bit and made it seem a little less threathening then maybe i could defend him but it still is not a good look for him considering he is a educator to chidlren and is infulencial.
