I'm sure most of you have heard about the controversy of the activity period. Although, for those of you who don't understand it let me explain it to you. The activity period would be held 8th hour. Except last year it was 10th hour because of the 10 period schedule. So durnig 8th hour if you were involved with a sport you would go to your practice. If you weren't you would go to class like normal. This year we didn't have it "because of covid."
There are many benefits to keeping the activity period. Keep in mind this isn't "Harlan High," we are Harlan Community. What that means is that we aren't just Harlan. We are also Panama, Difiance, Earling, Westphalia, and more. The activity period was put in place to allow the kids that don't live in harlan to not get home so late from practice. Without the activity period the students that live outside of harlan could get home as late as 6. Students who do sports still need time with their families. The activity period allows the same amount of practice time and more time at home with your family, and time to do homework. It also helps if you have an away game and you miss 8th hour you aren't going to miss an important class to make up. Also the teachers that are coaches don't have to miss their 8th hour classes leaving the 8th hour students to not get the same quality of teaching.
The one benefit that taking away the activity period is to allow students to take more classes. Some people say it will improve our academics but their is no way of knowing that. I know for sure that taking one extra class will not improve our ACT scores or our Iowa Assessments. Another argument is that it allows kids to take more college classes. This can allow students to graduate at the same level as a sophmore in college. Now that is great, but this is highschool not a college. I think we need to focus on being in highschool. I believe that now in highschool is our time to play sports and we can worry about academics in college. Yes, athletes who are very good will play sports in college. Although, for average athletes, like me, now is our time to play because we won't play in college. Even if athletes play in college it just isn't the same experience as highschool. A good point I heard someone make was, "This change only benefits the already high achieving students who want to take more classes. For our extra curricular programs and the majority of students, it's a huge disadvantage."

What is your opinion on the activity period?
Do you think it will really benefit us students?

I think that the activity period only helps the students. The school and teachers have to realize that kids have a life outside of school. If kids that want to do sports get home at 6 how are they supposed to get to bed early enough to get a good nights sleep there just isnt enough time in the day.
I totally agree that there just isn't enough time in a day with all the school work we have.
I think that we should keep the activity period. I think it's important to keep it because sports will get done so much earlier. Some teachers are worried becuase it shortens their classes, but isn't that what MTSS is for? I think it would be senseless for them to take it away.
I think they should leave it because taking it away takes peoples time away from school and sports. I think that they should not take it out because having it gives more people time to do homework and etc. No we already take the amount of clases that are required and taking more will benefit us in learning but in the long run it will take up a lot of time people need.
I think the activity period is a good choice and should be brought back. I have no study halls during the school day and getting home from sports at 6:30 everynight does not help my homework situtation. During the peak of basketball season, I was going to bed at midnight only to get up again at 6am just so I could get all my homework done. I think that taking away this period does more harm than good.
I agree. I'm the same way with no study hall. The activity period will help get homework done and allow us to get more sleep.
I think that the activity period was very beneficial. It allowed people to get home early enough to have dinner with their families. It also helped students and coaches not miss as much school as they are now. I think that we need this activity period back.
I think that it was awesome when we had the activity period in our schedule because it didn't keep us at school for so long. And now coming home from practice grant it I live in town, I still get home late and some days supper was already made and I didn't eat with my family. I really do think that it will benefit the students academically.
I agree. We need to be spending time with or families. Some students only way to college is sports and we want to help the graduate as well. Every student needs time with their family so the period will help.
I think it is very beneficial to have the activity period becasue sometimes for students that live far away have also other things to do and it would be better if we had an activity period. Yes, it really helps out many students and many students have other out of school activites and work and at the end it just all pilles up and students get stressed out.
