A Woman Is Cured of HIV Using A Novel Treatment

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a sexually transmitted infection that only appears in humans. Within a few weeks of HIV infection, flu-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and fatigue can occur. Then the disease is usually asymptomatic until it progresses to AIDS. AIDS symptoms include weight loss, fever or night sweats, fatigue, and recurrent infections.

2-3 days ago, a woman that is mixed raced was able to be cured from HIV. The new transplant method involving umbilical cord blood that opens up the possibility of curing more people of diverse racial backgrounds. Cord blood is more widely available than the adult stem cells used in the bone marrow transplants, and it does not need to be matched as closely to the recipient. Most of the donors are in Caucasian origin, so allowing for only a partial match has the potential to cure dozens of Americans who have both HIV. and cancer each year. The gender and racial background of the new case mark a significant step forward in developing a cure for the virus, HIV. Powerful antiretroviral drugs can control HIV., but a cure is key to ending the decades-old pandemic.

Only two other people have been cured of HIV, one was called "The Berlin Patient" that who died after 10 years from cancer and the other one, Adam Castillejo, was reported to be cured of HIV, confirming that the doctor's case was not a fake.

I think this would be good step for the scientist, because people all over the nation and the world are probably suffering from the virus. The virus has infected nearly 38 million people that are living with the virus, and about 73 percent of them are receiving treatment. I think this is a great discovering because this is just another step of saving peoples' lives from this deadly virus.

Questions:

1. Do you think the virus would be cured? If so, when do you think?

2. How do you think this story will effect citizens/people that are infected with the virus react?

  • Good topic choice and well done overall Salvador! I would have liked to see you comment back a few more times.

  • I think that medicine will advance enough to cure a lot of diseases that cause humans suffering, and maybe even death as time goes on . We are learining more and more every day about our health and how the environment around us. With this information, hopefully all those who suffer with HIV can be cured.

  • I think eventually doctors will find a way to cure almost anything. I also think a lot of people won't try this treatment simply because they don't know the side effects. I believe this story will give a lot of people hope because there is a possibility for a cure.

  • I think that some people with HIV will not get the treatment at first for the same reason people did not get the covid-19 vaccination. They don't know the long term effects. I think that this is a possible cure but I definitely think they need to do more research on this.

    • I totally understand and agree with you that they need to develop further more into research and gather as much information from this discovery/study. I pretty sure they are gonna go into more research on stem cell therapy on how well it works and how it can remove such harsh diseases.

  • I think scientists are really close to finding a cure for the disease. I think the problem sometimes is that what helps one person sometimes doesn't work for everyone. So hopefully this cure can help a lot of people. I think this gives hopeness to people that have the disease. Hopefully they can find a cure as close as possible.

  • I think that eventually scientists will cure about anything. I think that possibly scientists could have it cured within the next 20 years. I think that this story gives hope to those with the virus. It also gives hope to the scientists that are trying to work on the test.

  • I think the virus can be prevented better, and partially cured. It will probably be a while, more trials need to be done to ensure the saftey of anyone who would recieve the "cure". I'm not sure that we can fully cure this virus and guarantee it won't come back and it is completely gone. People will be very happy to hear this who have been infected with the virus.

  • I do think it is possible to cure the virus. I don't know if it will be completely cured but we will have a cure when it is diagnosed at some point in the future. This probably gives people with the virus hope that it could be cured because before this there was only treatment to delay it.

  • I feel like that the virus will hopefully be cursed, or at least die down, and not turn into something like covid were we get the treatment and no one wants to take it. I feel like that poeple who hear they can get trearted will be happy, because who knows how long they have suffered with that virus.
