Disclaimer: I am not citing any person or persons in specific. This is not meant to target any students or teachers in specific. All statements are general across the complete base of our MTSS system.
So, to begin I must state, I LOVE the MTSS system we have installed in our system. Between Jazz, Choir, Show Choir, Band, Theatre, and all of the other events I am in, I have to have some sort of time to focus on school. for my past 3 years of high school, I have been swamped with work. The MTSS system has allowed me to cull the masses of homework, and free me to practice and enjoy myself more. With that being said, I also see a huge flaw with the system.
Recently, I forgot to sign up for a day of MTSS. As soon as I realized, I contacted one of my teachers to request me, so I would have somewhere to go. This was maybe the second time I had missed in the whole year, the first being the very first day we had it. I was then called down to the office. After being asked where I wanted to go, I was told I had to attend detention. This is the basic punishment for missing one sign up. Yes, only one. Their validation behind this is that "it counts as an unexcused absence." How vastly incorrect of a statement that is. To begin, I was at school, not absent. I had made sure I would have somewhere to go, so I would not be absent.
So no. It is not an unexcused absence.
Secondly, from what people have told me, I am not a bad kid. I did not intentionally skip signing up. I had honestly thought I signed up for band, and planned to go there. The main problem I had, is that my detention would either cut into Jazz [ractice or Chamber Choir practice. After a little planning, I was allowed to go to Chamber, but that is beside the point. My punishment was unjust and unfair. Now if I consistently missed MTSS, I would think that would constitute detention. But one day, out of the ENTIRE YEAR. That doesn't make any sense.
It's unfair.
Frankly, I blame the people who intentionally do not sign up. They think it is "cool" or "hip" but it is not. It gives me an unfair punishment for their stupidity. I really do try to sign up, but sometimes it is just an honest mistake to forget. I know plenty of friends who have gone through similar situations and have been given the same dire fates.
To conclude: The MTSS system is very valuable. It has a lot of helpful systems. But the punishment method is unfair against those of us who want to be here. Once again, I am not targeting any students or teachers, just the system as a whole.
Why do you think we have the MTSS system?
To help students who need extra help.
Do you agree with the punishment system?
No, and my explanation is above.

MTSS is a good resource for kids that are having trouble in class. The punishment system, however, is bogus. I understand that they don't want people to forget to sign up, but these punishments are out of hand. A detention for continuously not signing up is reasonable, but for people who just forget every so often, they shouldn't have to serve a detention. We're human! We forget things sometimes!
Like you said, I believe we have MTSS for students who need extra help. I also like the MTSS system because if I miss a day of school, and need to make up a test, I can just do it during MTSS, as opposed to doing it during class. I also agree with many others that the punishment is a bit harsh, because some people don't have a chance to check their computers before 9:00, and sometimes there may be network isssues.
MTSS was put into place to help kids who need extra help with their school work. However, I find myself often not knowing what to sign up for. I go to different places that sometimes do not help me at all. I just did not have anything else to sign up for. I agree that the punishment system is too harsh. I also agree that it is unfair against those students who just generally forget to sign up. I think those students should have less of a punishment and just learn from their one time mistake of forgetting to sign up.
I think you bring up a lot of good points in what is good and what is bad about the MTSS system, I think MYSS is here to get students extra time in the classes they need help in. I do not agree with the punishment system like you say and I think they need to change it to something that makes more sense.
we hace mtss to help students out with extra work and assignments we need help with. i think we should get rid of academic also because we have mtss already and a study hall so i dont agree with that, i feel like we should have a little longe rpassing periods and no i do not agree with the punishment, because you could get a suspension just off of not signing up for mtss. i think some rules should change.
I agree with many points you made about this. I think that the MTSS session was a great idea. But the consequences are unfair also. The thing I do not like about MTSS is the length of the period if they are gonna have a period, get rid of academic support which i feel is unneccesary and add more time to the MTSS period and make passing periods back to 4 minutes. But I do like the additon of MTSS every day it gives you extra help on the subjects you need it on
I believe that we have the MTSS system for students who have missed a day and need to get caught up, or for students who got home late and simply forgot to do their homework. No, I believe it is unfair. For the people who aren't getting signed up daily, weekly, or even monthly, I believe that they deserve a punishment. Whether its detention or a simple talk with their parents I believe that it is unfair.
1. Yes, I think its nice for kids to get extra stuff done for a class they need more help or time in.
2. God no, 1 missed MTS sign up could lead to being expelled literally, don't sign up = Saterday det, not go = another, dont go = suspension, another = expelled. Are you kidding me?!? Very stupid.
Yes, I would have to nearly completely agree. I would say though it is a bit of a stretch to say that somebody could get expelled. I mean I suppose if it were in the handbook you aren't wrong, but I also feel that the school would not take MTSS that far. But if they did it just dutifully proves my point.
We have this system to help students with any subjects that they may have struggles with. I agree that the punishment for this system is unfair and doesn't help students to want to continue to sign up for MTSS. For receiving a detention, just for missing one day, is not okay. Give the student a warning, and continue raising the punishment the next time the student forgets to sign up. I also think it is important that if a teacher kicks a student out of their MTSS session, they need to email them and say they are no longer registered for that session. It shouldn't always be up to the student to check that they are still signed up. Those students may not have time to open their computer, go to the website, and see if they are still signed up. Yes, the system is very helpful and is worth it, but the punishments is way too harsh for anybody.
