Scrolling on Tik Tok you've probably seen alot of videos related to 97%. Social media users are making videos about being apart of the 97% and the trend is taking over Tik Tok, along with other popular social media platforms. The trend is spreading a very important message, and it's a reaction to the murder of a UK woman; Sarah Everard. Tik tok users everywhere are joining the trend, and the #97percent has had 8.2 million views within the last few weeks.
When people make videos about being apart of the 97% they are referring to a sexual harrassment statistic. An investigation by UN Women UK, released on March 10th 2021, found that 97% of women aged 18-24 have been sexually harassed, meaning that most of the UK female population has experienced some form of sexual harassment in a public space. Now reading this did you notice it says UK female population? I'm not exactly sure why girls from everywhere say their part of the percentage when they don't live in the UK; Sarah Everard lived there. Which is why the information is based off of the UK and not the US statistics.
The US stats are nearly 1 in 5 women (18.3%) and our population is about 330 million. The UK population is signifigantly smaller with about 70 million. So just comparing these you can see that they could actually be pretty close. But in general, sexual harassment is a serious problem. Watching alot of the Tik Toks concering the topic, women are recognizably mistreated. The amount of women that have shared their stories is unreal and I'm not saying this doesn't happen to men it's just that the percentage for women has become a recognizable issue.
How do you feel about this issue?
Do you think this should've blown up like it did? Why or why not?
What can we do to help reslove this?

Great topic choice and well written summary! You only commented three times. You should have replied about nine times with three pages of comments.
I think that it is very important for them to get the word out about this issue because people probably don’t think that the percentage is that high. Also everybody deserves the right to hear the percentage because it is way too high. I think that it deserves to be all over Tik Tok because most everything else on Tik Tok is dances and not really about important life things. I think the only way you can try and stop this is just keep spreading awareness about the issue.
I think it's terrible that 97% of woman from the age of 18 to 24 have been sexually harassed. It's not ok for people to treat woman with disrespect and it's awful that such a high number of woman in that age group have been sexually harassed. Yes I think it should of blown up like this because it might help stop this from happening so much.
I feel as if this issue could be right with the percentages because of how many girls get whistled at or anything just walking along the street and i think it is disgusting that some guys think it is okay to do that to women. It makes most feel scared to even walk out to their cars alone. I think it was okay that it went viral. Some sort of attention needed to be brought to the situation. I do not really know what could help. I feel like women now days are just like "that is something you have to deal and live with"
Obviously sexual harassment is a big problem. So this should be blowing up like it is. Although since it is a trend and 97 is an extremely high number, they might be exaggerating a little. I do think this is a real issue though and needs to be addressed so people can be educated on this topic.
This issue is extremely important and educating people on its impacts is vital. I think that it's great that this issue is being discussed and talked about. What some women have to go through is sickening. I think the way this information has blown up is good, but I do believe it may not be completely accurate. While educating women on self defense and offering them self-defense weapons like pepper spray is good, its more important to stop this at the root. Instead of telling women they need to learn how to defend themselves, we should be telling men that this is wrong. We need to be actually convicting and punishing these people for their actions so they understand that it's not okay.
The percentage doesn't matter if there is still one it should be paid attention. This pecentage has a right to blow up it doesn't matter what part of the world it is from. I don't knwo which problem you are refering to, if it is people trying to make themselves appart of this 97% we should definetely keep people informed.
This topic needs to be brought up to everyone and everyone should know about it. This happens on a daily and is not right. One solution that may help is if we educate people so they what they are doing wrong. Also, people just need to be normal humans and stop being rude to others. Think about what you are about to do or say before you do it.
I believe that things like this should definitely get light shined on them. However, this number is very high and I think that it may be a little exaggerated. You hear many examples all over tik tok and other social media platforms. I think it is getting to the point where most women and teen girls don't even want guys to look at them. I think people may just be seeking attention in some instances. Things may be uncomfortable when a guy winks at you or gives you an unwanted compliment, but for them they might just be trying to make you feel good about yourself. I think many women and girls should just take the compliment instead of blowing things way out of porportion.
I think this should receive attention, however, 97% is extremely high and I feel like it might be a little exaggerated. I feel like since this is becoming a trend, people who may not have actually been assaulted are saying they have. There's a difference between being "hit on" or flirted with vs. sexually assaulted so I think there are definitely people who may be stretching the truth for attention. However, I do agree that sexual assault is a real issue and deserves some attention.
