8-Year-Old Boy Saved From Ski Lift

In early February, 2019, an 8-year old boy was seen dangling from a ski lift chair 25 feet in the air on a Vancouver resort. His father was holding the boy's hands, gripping as hard as he could to try to keep his son from falling. Luckily, a teenager by the name of James Macdonald saw this situation and thought fast. He grabbed his friend, Gabriel Neilson, to help him find a net to catch the dangling boy. The teenagers and a couple other skiiers came together to gather materials for a "makeshift net". Macdonald tried to calm the 8-year old down while his father was getting ready to let go of his hands. The boy fell and landed safely in the net. No one was injured during this event.

Would you have stopped to help the son and his father if you saw something like this?

If I was skiing down the hill and saw a little boy dangling from a ski lift, I would have been confused. I don't think that I would have known to look around for a net or something to help the situation. Macdonald and others worked smart and fast.

How do you think the boy ended up dangling from the ski lift? Explain.

I think that a multitude of things could have happened. Ski lifts aren't the safest piece of equipment. The boy could have been looking over the edge and leaned too far. However it happened, the boy was lucky to have been saved without injury.

  • Great job Brecken!

  • Yes i would of stopped to help. I wouln't really know how/what to do but i would probably do the same as Macdonald and find more people to help me in helping the boy. I think he ended up dangling from the ski lift maybe because he wasn't sitting still or not listening.

  • Yes, the little boy and his dad were probably really scared at the time, so having someone to help would be such a big relieve. The boy is probably too small and was pushed by the air, or he just simply slipped and got to where he was.

  • If i had come upon something like this I don't think i would know what to do. I would probably be stunned for a second then try and find a way to help out. Ski lifts aren't that safe and there could of been a faulty piece on the ride and he could have been looking around leaned and fell off.

    • I agree that deciding what to do would be the most difficult thing for me. I would have to take a second to assess the situation and figure out what the most important needs were. Calling for help would probably be the number one thing. As you mentioned, ski lifts are not the safest place for children to be. I think that more attention should be given to this issue.

      • I totally agre with you that deciding on this part (what to do on situations like that) would be the hardest for me; I would get so nervous that I would not know what to do. Luckily, I would have someone to back me up and they might be faster with a solution to help the boy.

  • 1.) If I saw something like this I would definitely stop and help the son and his father. Because if I was in a situation where my kid was stuck and I couldn't do anything I know I would want someone that can do something to stop and help me.

2.) I think that multiple things could have happen note that ski lifts are not stable and really aren't that safe. I would say the boy was looking how high he was and leaned to get a better look over and just slipped. Luckily there were quick acting and smart people nearby to help save the boy with no injury.

    • I like how you pointed out that the child is 8 years old. It is not very likely that the child was listening or was aware that he was in any kind of danger. I wonder if the father tried to get him to stop messing around. However the  child slipped and fell, I would hope that he learned his lesson.

  • I would be super confused on what was happening but I would have definatly stopped and helped them. I also would've found someone else to help me help them because I wouldn't know what to do. I think that the boy was messing around then slipped and fell off the ski lift.

  • If I saw a young boy hanging from a ski lift i would stop and see what I could do to help. I think he was just watching the skiers and fell off the side. I think he was really lucky to not have any injurys.
