8 weeks in the hospital and $800k for a cut.

In 2017 a 6 year old boy went out to play in his family's farm in Oregon. He fell and cut his forehead which his family cleaned and stitched up at home. Six days later his jaw started tweaking out and he washaving arm spasms, followed by difficulty breathing. He was flown to the hospital where physicians diagnosed him with tetanus the first case seen in a child in Oregon in over 30 years. He had not been vaccinated. The details of his case were published this week in the CDC's weekly report. Tetanus is a disease of the nerves and muscles caused by the bacterium clostridium tetani. Bacterial spores found in soil can enter the body when the skin barrier is disrupted. The CDC recommends a tetanus vaccination series starting at 2 months of age. The agency also recommends boosters for adults every 10 years. Fewer then 100 cases per year have been reported to the CDC since the 1980s. Eight weeks and many medical procedures and $811,929 in hospital charges later, the boy's parents refused the recommended second dose of the tetanus vaccine. After intensive rehab, he is now doing well and has resumed his normal activities, according to the report

1. was it wise to try to clean and stitch the cut thereselves?

2. what do you think could result from refusing the second dose of the vaccine?

  • I think they should have taken him to the hospital right away when he got cut and had them look at it, I think if they went in none of this wouldv't happened. I think getting the second dose of the caccine would help out the kids in future situations and if you refuse it something could happen with your kids.

  • I wouldn't normally concern myself in other people's business when it comes to decisions with their own child, but I feel like refusing to get your child vaccinated is endangering the kid in future situations and allowing diseases that can be prevented to endanger the child. Technology and scientific advancements can be an amazing source of protection. We should take advantage of these opportunities given to us.

  • I think they should have taken him in when he got the cut so he could have got checked out before things got worse. I think it was not very smart of them to refuse him getting the vaccine, because all this would likely not have happened if he was vaccinated in the first place.

    • agreed the second vaccination would have been better so they are not running the risk of the child getting tetnas again and have to pay another big bill.

  • No, it was not smart to try and do the stiched yourself. It would have been wiser to have gone to the doctor and get it professionally stitched. He might have some brain damages and a loss of memory. The boy might fall behind in school and will need extra help with schoolwork.

    • i thi nk the same that it was not smart to stich it themselves if they would have messed up they could have cuased more damage and could have been more money in the end.

  • 1) Yes and no. I agree that people do not want to pay the huge bill and they wouldn't want to save the money. But, I thinkt that they should want to stay healthy. I don't know why they didn't

    2) Something could become infecte. Or, these people could end up becoming sick. I think that it was not smart to get the second dose. I think you always shoudl so you cna stay healthy.

    • i agree that nobody wants to pay such a big bill but to be healthy they should have taken the kid to the hospital because i be the bill wouldn't have been as big if they would have gone in right when he got cut.

  • I mean yes and no. yes because some people don't like going to the hospital to pay a big bill over something they can just fix thereselves and no because I would maybe have a doctor make sure everything was all right so like a checkup. If he would refuse the second dose he could maybe get tetanus again maybe later in his life.
