5-time NFL Pro Bowler Retiring?

An official announcement has not yet been released, but the Detroit Lion's star wide receiver Calvin Johnson has spoken with head coach Jim Caldwell  about his intentions to retire this off season. If this 9th season in the NFL is Calvin Johnson's last, then he will be leaving with 5 Pro Bowl appearances and 3 first-team All-Pro honors. These many honors will make him a surefire Hall of Famer when he is eligible for this great honor. Johnson has spoken with family and other teammates about his retirement and both say that he is very content with his decision.

Questions

1. Do you think that Calvin Johnson should retire or stay in the NFL? Why or Why not?

2. What would you do if you were in his situation?

Opinion- I think Calvin Johnson should stay in the NFL because he is still young and hasn't slowed down since he was drafted 9 seasons ago. He has been the biggest offensive weapon for the lions for the past how many seasons and has been one of the greatest wide receivers in the NFL. If I were him I would stay in the league and try for one more Super Bowl. The Lions can be a great team with Johnson, but I don't know how good they will be without him. I think he should try for one more season and if it doesn't go well he can retire.

  • Good but again, all of your comments were done on the same day.

  • I really don't think that it matters if the guy stays in the league or not. I think that the people in the NFL make way too much money anyways. I think that if the guy is even considering to retire now, he's obviously not putting his full heart into it anymore.

  • I think that he should do whatever he wants to do. He obviously has enough money to get him by if he played in the NFL and if he doesn't want to keep playing, he shouldn't feel that he has to. If I was in his situation, I might try one more year but nine is already a lot and if he's ready to be done then he should be!

    • I agree with how its nobody elses choice but his own. He can try if he wants but if he feels that he is done then he should take it easy and retire.

  • I can't really say if he should retire or not it all really comes down to personally preference. If he want's to retire he can it's his choice. If I was in his situation I wouldn't retire because he still has a good 5-10 years and he's a great player and I don't see why he is retiring at age 30.

    • Age 30 is very young to retire even for an NFL player but he can do what he wants to do because it is his life. He is a great play that I agree has at least 3 to 4 more seasons left.

  • There is little reason not to retire. He probably has all the money he will ever need. You also shouldn't put your body through that pounding year after year if you can avoid it. Unless you just love it so much you cant live without it, why not retire and give others a chance. If I were in his situation, I would have probably retired a few years ago, because I would be rich enough, and I would want to avoid more injuries, especially to the head.

    • The cost of living in the U.S. is a lot and I'm not sure that at age 30 he has enough money to live with his current life style. He loves the game and would love to keep playing it as long as possible but he has had a couple of injuries that have conflicted with his career. I think he should at least try and practice to see how the season goes.
