438 Days

Alvarenga and Córdoba planned a two day fishing trip. Both me were very experienced when it came to fishing and had been doing such sense they were kids. They knew there was a storm coming that just made the situation worse then it already was. But "It wasn't the storm that was the problem," remembered Alvarenga. "My engine gave out." For seven days straight the storm trashed there boat along with the harsh waters. Throughout the storm they lost most fishing gear, there radio and there engine gave out. All they had was there boat and just an icebox. The men survived for 438 day living off there own urine and rain, and by hand catching fish.

Alvarenga said keeping faith was important, how important do you think your keeping faith would be while in this type of situation?

How do you think you would feel mentally and physically after being on a boat over a year living off fish water and urine?

  • You definitely would need a lot of faith to be able to make it out alive from something like that! By telling yourself you can make it and staying positive you can do anything

  • Ya faith was very important in this situation, focusing on that you'll make it through the hardship. If he hadn't had faith that he get back to his old life he probably would of had the will to keep going. At first probably a bit ashamed I guess but then  I  would remember I did what I had to do to survive and be proud because I did I make it back home.

  • I think faith in this situation would be the most important thing. Keeping the mindset that I would see my friends and family again would be all that kept me wanting to fight to stay alive. I think it would be so mentally draining. I don't know how anyone can come back as their self after they go through such a traumatic experience like that.

  • I think that if you lost any faith at all it would be over because then you are basically telling your body to shut down and that you don't want to do it anymore. If I was on a boat and have to live off those things I think my body and mind would just wear down to the point until breaking.

  • It would be very important because without that faith I would probably give up. I would probably be slightly insane and I'm sure I'd be emaciated and physically weak.

    • I agree, i think faith would play a big role to staying alive and increase your chances to stay alive

  • I think it's very important to keep your faith at this point. Without their faith, they never would've made it and would've just given up. I would probably never eat fish again in my life. I would be disgusted by the fact that I had to drink my own urine too.

  • If you lost your faith then you would have just given up and they would not have survived that long without it. Mentally they probably feel happy to finally get off that boat and they are probably happy they get something to eat besides fish.

  • I think that ist is hard but important to keep faith in this case because you would want to give up, but they knew they couldn't. I would mentally feel like I wasn't gonna make it. Physically, I think that there would be nothing I could do anyway, I cant just go back.
