3-D Printer Saves 4 Year Old Girl

For the first 3 and 1/2 years of her life, Mia Gonzalez had an abnormally excessive number of colds and she struggled breathing all the time. After around 10 hospital stays doctors noticed that Mia had a malformation in her aorta, which she would need open heart surgery to fix.  However her malformation was complicated, and doctors were nervous about even doing the operation. But, using a 3-D printer to model Mia's heart, doctors were able to find an easier way to operate on her. The printer took information from MRI's and CAT scans of her heart, and created a 3-D model of it. This allowed lead surgeon Dr. Redmond Burke, to not only find a way to perform the operation, but the fastest and least invasive one as well. He estimated that the printer saved the patient a considerable amount of pain as well as 2 hours in the operating room. The surgery went so well that a month later Mia was able to perform in her dance recital with no issues at all. This is not the first time a 3-D printer has been used to model organs. Dr. Burke alone stated that he has used this strategy about 25 times in his career. 75 hospitals in the United States have this technology. Printer companies plan to eventually produce "ink" that can be used to print a real working human organ.

How do you think this technology will help doctors with operations in the future?

My opinion: I think it will completely change the entire medical world, perhaps operations that once couldn't be performed are now possible. Thousands maybe even millions more lives could be saved. This will greatly help the doctors as well because as the article said it takes some of the pressure off of the doctor because the doctor already has a much more detailed plan of how he/she is going to conduct the surgery.

  • Again, good story and be sure to hyperlink correctly. You also need to reply more frequently as you only replied four times.

  • Well if they can have a 3d model in front of them they can see if better and work on it until they find a good way to work on the patient.

  • I think in the future tech. will help doctors but it will also cause so problems

  • It'll probably get to a point where they won't need a human doctor for major surgery. Computers don't make mistakes if they are programmed correctly, perhaps the success rate of surgeries will jump to 100%. That would be pretty cool.

  • I think this is definitely raise the rates of people dying each from health problems. It will make it easier for doctors when they do new surgeries.

  • This sounds amazing its crazy how technology is advancing. I think this is great for technological advances. this is probably great for doctors. I think this will change the medical field completely.

  • I think that this will make it easier for more complicated operations that doctors are afraid to do because of the risk of possible loss of life. If they do find a way to make real, functioning organs there will be greater life expectancy in the near future.

  • I think technology could make a huge impact on surgeries, but doctors need to make sure not to depend on it too much.

    • I agree, sometimes we rely on technology way to much and when it fails we fail with it, which sometimes can't be an option.

  • I think it will help them plan more accordingly for surgeries, that way they will be able to see it better and practice without hurting the patient.
