2020/2021 Tokyo Olympics

The first ever Olympics took place in 1896, in Athens. Since then the Olympic games are held every 4 years. The 2020 Olympics were to be held in Tokyo, Japan in late July. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were postponed and eventually canceled due to Covid-19. In September 2020, the Vice President of the Olympic games came out and said, “The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will be held with or without Covid-19.” This basically means that if covid is still a problem, the Olympics are still going to be held either way. The games are to be held on July 23 through August 8th. But there are still a few problems.

Athletes participating in the Olympics will not be required to get the Covid vaccine but it is encouraged by the Japanese government in respect to keeping their country safe. I think that it would be good for the athletes to be smart and get the vaccine just so there is a less chance of getting Covid-19 and infecting more people. The only requirement is every athlete must download the japanese contact tracing app and write everything down that they did 14 days prior to the event. I think this is a bad regulation because you could say you were staying home and training but you could have really been out with other people.

Fortunately the event was already going to take place in Tokyo, which also has the lowest amount of confirmed Covid cases. I think Tokyo is the best place to host the event due to the low amount of cases but I think it could also be risky to bring a lot of people from other countries with more cases into Tokyo just because they might start seeing a lot more people get infected. The athletes are also required to wear masks at all times when not competing and there will be limited in-person attendance.

Should Olympic athletes be required to get the covid vaccine?

Is Tokyo, Japan the best place for the Olympic games to be held?

  • Good topic choice and well done Cael!

  • I don't know if they should be required to get it. I think it should be optional because I'm sure that everyone will be taking a lot of precautions to make sure that they aren't getting the virus. I think it's a pretty good place to hold it because there isn't very many people infected in their country so you have a smaller chance of the athletes getting infected,

  • I don't think they should be required to get the vaccine because who knows if even really works. I feel they should have to get tested to do their sport and that they should be tested on a daily. I also feel Tokyo is a good spot for the Olympics because they have the least amount of the virus.

    • I agree with you that Tokyo is a good spot for the event to take place due to their low amount of cases.

  • I don't think it should be required for athletes to get the vaccine. I do think they should be required to be tested before and after to make sure they do not have Covid-19 and they should wear masks and practice social distancing. I think Tokyo, Japan is a good place to have the olympics because it will be less likely for people to get it.

    • I agree with you that they should be tested before and after and I also agree with you that tokyo is a good place for the event to be held.

  • I think olympians shouldn’t have to get the vaccine. If they have to wear masks and social distance already, they shouldn’t need to get the vaccine. The vaccine could also affect them while playing/performing. If they were worried about the spread of covid so much they shouldn’t have held it in Tokyo.

    • I agree with you that it should be their choice to get the vaccine but they should be encouraged for others safety.

  • Athletes should not be required to get the vaccine in my opinion. If there was more proof behind it and it was fully FDA approved, then I could see that, although it should be someone's choice. Tokyo is probably not the best place to hold the Olympics, but I say this only for the concern of the people there. If they have the lowest amount of cases, this could mean that the amount of immunity is lower throughout the area as well. If another country's participant brings it over, it could potentially devestate them, especially with it being people from all over the world, as there are already three different strains.

    • I agree with you that bringing covid over from another country could hurt the Tokyo.
