200 Trapped in Mine

In Southern Africa, rescuers worked all morning Sunday to free almost 200 men who were trapped in an abandoned mine.  They were in the abandoned mine searching for gold. It was Saturday afternoon when they became trapped. The men in the mine claim that they became trapped when a rival mining group dropped large boulders down the shaft. There is also talk that it was just a rock slide that caused them to become stuck. They were found Sunday when police were out looking for illegal dumping when they heard the shouts of the trapped men.

The government in Africa has warned citizens from attempting to get into old abandoned mines, due to safety reasons. Southern Africa Parliament is discussing legalizing searching in the mines because it will provide many people with jobs, but aren't sure because of cost issues.

Do you think that they should allow them to start mining in the abandoned mines? Why or why not?

  • Great job Cati!

  • I think they should because more people will have jobs and the people will be able to find the gold.

  • I don't think they should because it's not safe.

  • I think they should make a law that they have to make the caves safe before going in. If they don't, then it is not the governments fault.

  • I dont think they should be allowed to do that because the mines wouldn't be safe if they have been abandoned.

  • I dont think they should be allowed to do that because the mines wouldn't be safe if they have been abandoned.

  • It was their faults, they had been warned.

    • True, but a lot of them are only doing it so they can get money to provide for their family.

  • no because this could happen again and someon can die

  • I don't think they should allow them to mine in abandoned mine without training or proper safety equipment because it is just too dangerous to be in mines without those necessary things
