On Friday, September 20, 2,200 nurses went on strike at the University of Chicago Medical Center. The nurses state that they're “being forced to work long hours and cannot provide the proper care their patients need.” Their 24 hour strike began at 7am outside of the hospital. Unfortunately for the nurses, they are not able to return to work until Wednesday because the hospital had to hire replacement nurses, and they have to be guaranteed at least five days of work. The nurses on strike made it very clear that they didn’t want to go on strike, but felt that it was necessary because the patients weren’t getting the care they need. Do you feel like the nurses are going to accomplish their goal? Why?
I believe the nurses will eventually accomplish their goal, but it will definitely take some time because they can’t fix these types of things overnight.
How would you feel as a patient there, having to transfer to a different hospital because the nurses are on strike?
As a patient, I would obviously feel frustrated and annoyed, but at the same time I would understand because the patients are fighting for what’s right.

Great job Raegen!
I agree I do think that overtime there will be some change happening because nurses are very very important for health care. I think it is good that they are standing up for themselves, and I think it is a very self-less act to do this for the patients.
I believe that they will accomplish their goal considering the massive size of them, 2,200 is a lot of people to anger and if the university is seen as the bad guy their reputation could be dampened. I would feel pretty surprised but likely understanding of the nurses strike.
I dint think nurses should be woring longer shifts because they have a had and frustrating job, they are still people and need time with there families and they still need sleep like the rest of us. if i was a patien there i would be very mad, i would not want to deal with it but i know i would have to anyway and atleast it would be for a good cause.
I believe the nurses will accomplish their goal but it will take a lot of sacrifices on the patient end. As a patient I would also be very frustrated, because you go to the hospital to get healthy and get out as soon as possible. This just takes more time on your end.
That is a very good point. I would also feel very frustrated having to spend more time in the hospital than you already do. If you think about it, it can maybe even cause more problems in the patients because they are stressing, freaked out, etc.
As a patient, I would not be happy because if you were in an emergency and needed to get into the hospital quick. Then next thing you know your doctor isn't there. Then, you would have to find a whole new doctor or you would have to go to a different hospital which would result in a lot of paperwork and time.
Yes, I believe they will accomplish their goal because of the fact that them going on strike makes it so the boss has to find multiple replacement nurses. This makes it so the boss has to work harder. Also, if they could find enough replacement nurses while they went on strike then they should be able to find enough nurses to fill in the hours to give other nurses breaks.
I think they will accomplish their goal becuase nurses are in high demands so the hospital long term would likely be unable to replace them and that puts the nurses in a strong barganing position becuase the hospital needs them to stay employed. I would also be frusterated expecially if I was there for an emergency, however i would probably feel for the nurses.
yes they will get there words acrost the people and they will not give up until they are geting want there rights
