11 Year Old Pro

Michigan boy who didn't want his 11th birthday party because he has no friends is getting a new gig. A professional hockey player. Colin and his family were surprised by players and coaches of the Kalamazoo Wings at a restaurant on Tuesday. The team presented Colin with a one-day contract to be with them at their home game on Sunday. Colin has a condition similar to Asperger's syndrome that makes it hard for him to relate to his peers. His mother created a Facebook page, "Happy Birthday Colin", that got nearly 2 million likes, and he received thousands of cards. Colin says that all of the affection has "been very heartwarming."

I think this story is great! I'm sad that an 11 year old thinks this way about himself and not having any friends but what these people did for him was great.

How would you feel if you were Colin in this situation? How do you think Colin is feeling about this whole situation? Do you think it is helping his self-esteem?

  • Very positive story! Good job!

  • I would probably be very nervous. I think Colin would be very excited! this is a great story.

  • I think this will help his self esteem. Maybe now he has something to talk about with his peers. It'll still be hard for him to connect though. It was really nice and heart warming what the hockey team did. I love to see sports teams spend time with kids who have an illness.

  • I think Collin is probably feeling really good now. If I was in his situation I wouldn't know what to think. Its great that people would do this for him. It probably is helping his self-esteem a lot, but he will probably still have issues with being around other people.

  • Well If I had no friends I would be awful sad. Probubly awful sad. Yes

  • i think he his happy right now and will be happy

  • This is so cool, i think that more sports teams and athletes should do this because kids look up to the athletes, and this could make a huge impact in some kids life.

  • I think it is very cool that the hockey players would do something like this. If I were Colin, then I probably wouldn't know how to react in the situation. With not having friends, and then having 2 million likes on facebook would be a bit overwhelming.

    • Yea it would be a bit overwhelming but I think it would be worth it to know people care.

  • This is absolutely wonderful! It would be the greatest day of my life if I was him (of course if I had the same interests), what a story to tell. I sure hope he's happy about it, major self esteem boost, hopefully it will help him make more friends :)
