1000 Years Until We Go Extinct

Stephen Hawking, a very well known scientist, has recently said that humanity will not be able to survive another 1,000 years on Earth. He says that a massive disaster happening within one year is unlikely. However the possibility of something happening that could destroy our Earth within the next 1,000 or 10,000 years is very likely. The factors that have made him think this way are climate change, nuclear weapons, and robots. Also he says that to save the human race, we may have to move from this planet to other places in space.

Do you agree with him? Why?

What else could shorten our time on Earth?

What could we do to extend the time?

I think he makes a good point. There are definitely signs that support his claim. Also I think that he could have added world wide famines, too many people, and depleting natural resources to his list. I also think that this may be a little too soon. No one, no matter how smart, actually knows when our world will end. I am a little skeptical. I think we could start putting restrictions on how many children you can have to ensure that there wouldn't be as many famines. We could also start switching to renewable and clean energy, such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric.

  • Great job Kyle!

  • I think he is a very smart man and has a good point but in reality no one knows what will happen. I think all the bad stuff listed there are not exactly helping to save our planet. I think there could be a lot of things that could be danger to Earth that we don't know of. We should try to stop the climate change for starters. Start paying more attention to what you're doing, recycle and help in every way. People should not make stuff that isn't good for our planet and environment.

  • I do believe that bad things are going to happen in the next 1,000 - 10,000 years. Whether it be something man made or nature made, I don't know.  To extend the time I feel like we should just keep doing what we are doing and keeping the environment clean.

  • I do believe that there will be a lot of problems in the future because of all the technology coming out right now. There are many points that support what he is trying to get through to people. I think fighting and new wars will happen. I believe we need to take care of Earth in a better manner and do what we can to make the environment better.

  • I do think that there will be a lot of problems in the future because of pollution, climate change, and nuclear weapons. I think all this fighting with terrorist will eventually lead to war and nuclear weapons will get involved. I think we need to stop polluting our planet and go as green as possible.

  • honestly it might not look likely to us now but i have to agree with him because looking at where we started and where we are now it's impossible to stop the worst. something that is also going to probably destroy us is the burning of fossil fuels because they aren't renewable and the effect of that is it's destroying the ozone layer. To extend our time we might have to find renewable resources and as fast as possible, i know scientists have been looking at renewable resources but if we don't do it fast we might bring the worst on ourselves...we are literally running out of time.

  • It is very possibly because of the causes that he listed. One big way the could shorten our time on the earth is polluting the air and not taking care of it at all. We could clean it up and not use so many nuclear weapons.

    • Air pollution is terrible and we have already seen what it can do to huge cities like Beijing. Hopefully we can reduced how much we release into the air.

  • Its possible and when I run it through my mind, it makes sense a little, but it could also not be true. By polluting the earth and not being kind and taking care of it. We could clean it up, not leave trash on the streets.

    • I agree, it makes sense and could happen, but we don't know if it will. No one really knows.
