Red Scare- 1919-1920- Russia becomes Soviet Union. We feared that they would invade the US.
Communism- Practice vs Theory- Russia is the mother of all Communism
Banned Religion, No internet, Usually a dictator, not freedom of speech.
Theory-Perfect society. Make everything equal. No poverty. Didn't like Capitalism.
Practice of Communism is what is today.
Vladimir Lenin- 1917-1924. He lead the communist. He believed that communism was going to work well.
The US tried to prevent Communism by the Palmer raids. J. Hoover was in charge of the FBI. Palmer raids were a series of raids that they went out and arrest radicals and deport them. The raids started because of strikes and race riots. There was two bombings in April and June 1919. 500 foreign people were deported during the raids. Most were legit citizens.
Sacco and Vanzetti-In 1920 two men robbed and murdered a paymaster and his guard as they transferred money from a shoe factory. These two were accused and arrested even though there was no real evidence. They were immigrants from Italy and didn't believe in government. They were executed in 1927.
Tuesday-
Immigration in the 1920's. The immigration act of 1924. Greatly reduced immigration to US. The law was aimed at restricting immigration of Southern Europeans, Eastern Europeans, and Jews. Restricted immigration from Africa, Arabs, East Asians, and Indians
Republicans of the 1920's- South was usually democrat. I see a day when poverty will be banished from this nation. Herbert Hoover said this.
Republican Philosophy- Conservation opposed to progressive. Believed in lower taxes, high tariffs, and less government, lower immigration. Trickle-down theory- more tax breaks on the big businesses so they will hire more people/ open more businesses. Laissez-faire- government needs to stay out of businesses.
Rugged individualism- up to you to work hard. Its how hard you work. A Return to "Normalcy"
Albert Fall- Teapot Dome Scandal
Wednesday-
Warren Harding's Death and Funeral, he had bad health and a lot of stress. He became the first president to visit Alaska. Fell over giving a speech. He had an Ohio doctor that he trusted, but wasn't very good. He died by his wife.
Automobiles on US- Created jobs. Allowed people to move throughout the United States. Allowed for teenagers to date and drive their person around.
1920 Census-51.2 people lived in cities of 2,500 or more. 1922- 1929 more then 2 million people moved from farms to the cities each year. Rural areas tried to hold on to moral values and close social relationships. Cities had more drinking, gambling, and casual dating.
Prohibition "The Noble Experiment"- 18th amendment. Banned the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages was illegal. You could drink it that wasn't illegal. Alcohol was allowed for medicine and religious purposes. Prescriptions and sacramental wine orders skyrocketed.
It failed because people thought it was ridiculous
