After 5 years he would eventually discover what he thought was a perfect solution called Tetraethyl Lead or Ethyl. While this fuel did stop the knocking, it faced a huge problem that ended in the death of millions of people and still plagues the world today.

Lead wasn't seen as a huge threat and many concerns for it were dismissed at the time. It is, however, incredibly toxic at incredibly low levels. It can fuse to bone and is most harmful to the brain. For young children this can lead to permanent delayed learning, decreased IQ, and increased behavioral and mental problems. Many studies have also shown that the rate of increase in crime around the world from the 1950s to the 1990s is shockingly similar to the increase in Lead levels just 20 years earlier. It is not known if these values correlate, but this same pattern can be found in many other countries. Another effect of Lead exposure is a hardening of the arteries, leading to a much higher chance of cardiovascular disease. A study in 2018 states that with all this, Lead was likely responsible for around 250,000 heart disease-related deaths each year in the US alone. Over the past century, the Lead from Midgley's invention had probably been responsible for over 100 million deaths worldwide.

Some might argue that Midgley couldn't have known how much of a problem his invention would bring to the world over a century later and that the increase in crime was the people's choice, so he should not be held responsible. However, Midgley did know of the risks that Ethyl brought, but didn't discuss them or even approve of their existence. He even tried to prove its safety by touching and inhaling it himself. He would later turn down any interviews and public talks he was asked to attend because he would spend most of that time recovering from Lead poisoning himself. He knew firsthand that his product was extremely dangerous, but still decided to not share the risks with the public. Thanks to him millions of people were letting Lead into the atmosphere through their cars. Now modern-day humans carry over 1000 times more Lead in their bodies than our early ancestors.

I believe that Midgley is somewhat accountable as he did know that ethyl was dangerous but still tried to sell it to the public to maximize profit. While most of the increase in crime is probably just due to human choice, I do think that Lead levels must have some effect on it. I think this famous quote by Benjamin Franklin about the dangers of Lead explains this concept pretty well, "You will observe with concern how long a useful truth may be known and exist before it is generally received and practiced on."

Do you think his invention is to blame for the increase in crime and death?

Do you think Midgley should be held acountable for the deaths his invention might have caused?

Did you find this topic interesting and why?

https://www.bbvaopenmind.com/en/science/research/thomas-midgley-harmful-inventor-history/#:~:text=Midgley's%20dark%20discovery&text=So%20Midgley%20was%20sent%20back,make%20money%20for%20General%20Motors.&text=Within%20just%20a%20few%20months,%3A%20tetraethyl%20lead%20(TEL).

https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2118631119

https://biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/get_the_lead_out/pdfs/health/Needleman_2004.pdf

https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/2017GH000064

Should High Schoolers Have Recess Timehttp://mrbruns.ning.com/profiles/blogs/should-high-schoolers-have-recess-time2023-08-28T18:37:25.000Z2023-08-28T18:37:25.000Z4Teaganhttp://mrbruns.ning.com/members/7Teagan

I believe we should have recess time for two reasons. First of all, I believe it will help with academics. Secondly, I believe it will help students' mental and brain growth.

High school is a crucial time for academic and personal growth. Providing recess in high schools to high schoolers can positively impact their development in various areas, such as academic achievement, and critical thinking skills.

Having recess during the school day can greatly benefit students’ mental well-being. It provides a much-needed break from academic tasks, allowing students to recharge and refresh their minds. Engaging in physical activity and socializing with peers during recess can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance cognitive function. By incorporating regular recess into school schedules, we can support students’ mental health and create a positive learning environment.

In conclusion, incorporating recess into the school day not only supports students’ mental health but also promotes academic brain growth. By providing a break from academic tasks. Recess additionally helps with engaging in physical activities and socializing. Let's continue to prioritize recess as an essential component of student development for both academic and mental health benefits

Mental Health Not Finishedhttp://mrbruns.ning.com/profiles/blogs/mental-health2023-08-25T21:38:50.000Z2023-08-25T21:38:50.000Z4Tiffanyhttp://mrbruns.ning.com/members/Tiffany

Tiffany

Should President Biden be impeached?http://mrbruns.ning.com/profiles/blogs/should-president-biden-be-impeached2022-01-26T16:04:14.000Z2022-01-26T16:04:14.000Z3Annahttp://mrbruns.ning.com/members/Anna3

Many people believe that president Joe Biden should be impeached. There are a lot of good and bad things he has done, since he has became our president and we will go over those things.

To begin Joe Biden, our 46th president, who was sworn is January 20, 2021, has done some good and some not so good things for our country.

Starting with the why Joe Biden should be impeached is because he weaponized the FBI to intiminate parents who showed up at the school board meeting .Second in 2021, 12 major cities in the U.S. broke the annual homicide records, and yet Biden ended the Trump Justice Department’s Operation Legend, which was responsible for deploying federal officers to aid local law enforcement during that time. Next even though we were in a major labor shortage Biden pushed for vaccine mandates, forcing companies with more than 100 employees, to fire their unvaccinated workers, making the labor shortage worse. Then with his war on war on fossil fuels, he helped drive domestic production down, causing gas prices to rise more than ever. Next, Biden pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept Russia's dominance over the Ukrainian country. Also president Biden is accused of spending $1.9 trillion dollars in social spending was disguised as "covid releif". And lastly what some people beleive is his worst things yet is his withdrawal from Afghanistan, when he left 62,000 of our Afghan allies behind enemy borders, and forced NATO allies to abandon their citizens and allies as well.

Now that we covered Biden's not so good actions let us look at the bright side, and what things he has done good for our country.

To start Joe Biden provided $546 million dollars on emergency housing assistance for people that are, or at risk, of being homeless. Next, has to be the stimulus checks during covid-19. Also he sent $1.3 billion to North Carolinian to help with child care. In addition, president Biden dministered 200 million vaccine doses in just 100 days. As well as providing $7.25 billion to small businesses. Biden also extended unemployment insurance and child credit payments. Additionally he Banned workplace discrimination against LGBT employees. He also provided dept relief for colored farmers.

Now that we went over pesident Joe Biden's positive and negitive actions, we now know that even though Biden has not done the best things for our country non of the things he has done is illegal and not worth being impeached. Plus if President Biden was to be impeached he would have commented the following, treason, bribery, or other high crimes. So in short terms, even though lots of people dislike Joe Biden and he is not the best president, it is not bad enough to remove him from office,

Christmas before Thanksgiving?http://mrbruns.ning.com/profiles/blogs/christmas-before-thanksgiving2021-11-26T23:56:16.000Z2021-11-26T23:56:16.000Z7Teyahttp://mrbruns.ning.com/members/3Teya

Christmas is the happiest and most joy filled holiday. Is Christmas celebrated too early or too late? During this time of the year there's a big debate about setting up your Christmas tree before thanksgiving. Scientists have even looked into this debate, trying to prove one side or the other.

Studies have shown that setting up your Christmas tree before thanksgiving actually makes you happier and more friendly. Psychologists have proven that Christmas decorations bring you back to a simpler and happier place meantally. On the more scientific side then mentally, Christmas decorations help boost dopamine. Dopamine is a hormone that helps regulate your moods, sleep, appetite, digestion, learning ability, and memory. On the other hand some people have said they feel like they're skipping over thanksgiving and not celebrating it enough.

I personally think that you should set up your Christmas tree before thanksgiving for different reasons. First, It literally makes you a happier person to set Christmas decor up. Scientists have even proven this with multiple different studies, mentally and physically. Lots of people are changing their traditions to setting trees up early. Tree farmers have even shown that people are now buying their trees early. Tree farmers have said that for a long time they have been selling most trees two weeks before Christmas, but now they are selling the most trees at the end of november.

Do you think it's too early to set up your Christmas decorations before thanksgiving?

When do you set up your Christmas tree?

https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/people-who-decorate-for-christmas-early-are-happier-study-says/

Similar Coincidences Of Lincoln & Kennedyhttp://mrbruns.ning.com/profiles/blogs/similar-coincidences-of-lincoln-kennedy2020-12-06T21:26:39.000Z2020-12-06T21:26:39.000Z2Tjerinhttp://mrbruns.ning.com/members/2Tjerin

There are conspiracies between John F. But why is it that they had so many similar things happen in their lives? Was it maybe because ina a similar way they are similar? Or maybe they were somewhow connected?
