Should We Be Required to Take PE in Highschool?

In high school many students are involved in sports, activities, or clubs. Some students prefer to have a study hall or another class over physical education. The first teaching of physical education was in 1825 by a German named Charles Beck in Massachusetts. The big question is; Should students be required to take PE? There are many pros and cons of being required to take PE as a high school student.

Firstly, the pros. In highschool many students are very busy with work and school work. Sometimes this causes them to not get physical activity every day. Requiring PE would help those students move their bodies throughout the day. Another pro would be relieving stress. During the day all of the students' classes are just learning and homework, PE would let the students forget about the stress of homework and move their bodies. Studies have shown that physical education can improve academic behavior, enhanced concentration, and improved class behavior.

On the other hand, many students do not prefer to be required to take PE. Some students want to participate in physical activity less than others. As they would rather spend their time on something they enjoy. It takes students out of a class that they might have more interest in. Students may want to use the hour for college classes or trade school classes.

I feel highschool students should be required to take PE. When students are required to take PE it gets them to move their bodies. I believe that will help them relieve some stress, hopefully causing them to do better in classes. Oftentimes students would like to work out at home or at the gym but they get busy with work or school and don’t get around to doing it as often as they’d like.

Do you think highschool students should have to take PE?

Do you think if you’re in a sport you should be exempt from PE?

Do you think it is good that the teachers pick the games for the students in PE?

  • I think that high school students should be required to take PE because helps students stay active during the day and give students a much need break for their minds. I also think that every student that is involved in a sport should be given the option to drop PE. That way the student can take another class or a study hall since they already will get physical activity in later. I think that the teacher should give students a few option and then let them choose from there.

    • I agree. I think that students in sports should be able to choose if they want to be in the class. Sometimes it can be hard to get homework in after practice or after a game. Having a study hall could help those students.

  • I think that schools should required PE because it is very important that people get some sort of physical activity in a day. It can also be a good break from all the schoolwork and tests in the acedemic classes. I think that if you participate in a sport, then you can have the option not to take PE. I think that the game choosing should be equally divided between both the teacher and the students.

  •  I think highschool students should have to take PE because it would help to balance the day from all the stress the students have during the day. That means students are virtually forced to exercise at least once a day. Movement is important for your body so there are only advantages to working out in PE classes.

Personally I think its good that the teacher pick the games in PE because when I had to choose the games, they were always the same. So it helps if the teacher chooses the games so that the lessons are varied.

    • I agree. I think it helps students not worry about any school work for a class period and just lets them have fun.

  • In my oppinion students should be required to take a PE class, because its alway good to at least get a little bit of physical activity, and it would also gives us a break from sitting in a chair for hours just to like move for a good 30 to 40 minutes.

  • I think some people need the physical activity but I think others don't. I think if your in at least 1 sport in the semester then you should be able to skip PE and sub it for a study hall or something else.

  • I think PE should be required becasue, some people aren't in many class as you get closer to graduating,  so PE would be a good class to do other than just sitting there on your phone. Its also good for sports to get some extra cardio. I think the teachers should be the one who picks because there wouldn't be a huge arguement about what they're going to do.

  • I think that students should be required to take a PE class unless they are in at least 1 sport per semester. Students need to stay active throughout their child and teen years. Many students don't have the time to be a part of physical activity outside of school. Having a PE class can give them an opportunity, to stay active, that they wouldn't have outside of school.

    • I agree. Sometimes it's hard to workout after school because you might have work or homework. Have PE during the day will help people make sure they get to move their body at least a little during the day.
