Obama releasing woman that leaked military documents

Six years into a 35-year sentence, Chelsea(Bradley) Manning's sentence is now set to expire May 17. Manning was arrested in 2010 after leaking some 700,000 military documents to WikiLeak. At the time of the arrest, Manning wanted to be recognzied as a woman, a transgender. She leaked these documents to confront gender dysphoria with military. Her sentence is one of 209 that will be getting shortened by Barack Obama this year.

Questions:

1. Do you agree or disagree with Obama's decision?

 2. How long do you think the sentence should've been?

My answers:

1. I don't agree because although many military members uphold their promises and things with our country's secrets, some will slip. When those who slip do this for things like standing up for gender rights I don't think that should be the main reason the president is letting them out, making a statment even though Manning committed the crime.

2. I think that the 35-year sentence should've been upheld.

  • Good overall but I do think your summary is brief and could have been longer to better explain the story.

  • No I think she should spend life in jail. She leaked a huge amount of documents that put several people and troops in danger. I think she should spend life in jail transgender or not.

  • I think that the 35-year sentence should have been upheld and not shortened to 6 years. Manning did something illegal by slipping so many military documents through and no matter why she did it, it's a serious crime. Too many people get sentenced for something but then their time in prison gets shortened and in this case it shouldn't have happened.

  • No, I think she should've stayed in prison for her crime. She leaked 700,000 military documents, that's a severe crime. I think the sentence should be a lot longer than the 6 years she has served. At least the whole 35 years.

  • I disagree because Manning did something that is illegally and I think that Manning should have to serve the 35 years that she was sentenced. There are many people who get sentenced for something they didn't do but they still have to serve their time. I think Manning should have had to serve those 35 years.

    • I agree with you Abbie, because yes everyone does stuff like this and have to serve this time and sometimes it's not as severe.

  • I disagree that she is only serving six years. I think she should have to serve the full 35 years and not have it shortened.  I think the 30-40 years would have been about right because she could have leaked classified info that is a serious crime. So she should have to serve the amount of time she was given.

  • I think she should be serving her full sentence. I think 35 years and good and she should be serving the whole thing she committed a crime she needs to do the time.

  • I disagree.

she should of had about 40 years

    • I agree because this was a serious crime.
