History In Your Own Backyard

Last year around July 26, there were bones found at a construction site in Council Bluffs. These bones are said to be from the Mormons that went from Illinois to Salt Lake City. On there trip they came across in the middle of winter and the dreadful winter of Iowa would kill one or more family members at a time.  These bones are said to be over 100 years old or older.

I think this is very interesting do to the fact that its close to where we live and its something that I've drove by over 100 times or more.

What would you of done if you would of found the bones?

Have you ever thought about what could be buried in your backyard?

  • Your story choice is great! Be sure to expand a bit more on your summary and you didn't reply to any student comments. That is worth 20 points.

  • If I had found those bones, I would have done some research online to find out the correct way to handle the situation. I'm assuming they would need to be given to specialist in fossils and bones, but I would need to find out who exactly to give them to. Yes, I have thought about what could be buried in my backyard and it's interesting that those bones were found so close to our area.

  • I honestly probably would have been a little freaked out and unsure of what to do if I found the bones. I would probably try to figure out who to call and notify. When I was younger, I definitely thought about what could be buried in my backyard. It's hard to imagine that I would find something significant in my own backyard.

  • I would be very frightened if I found the bones all of a sudden. I guess I've never really thought about what's buried in my backyard, but I imagine there's a lot of old things. Maybe even some cool, unique items that cost a lot.

  • I would have freaked out if I would have found the bones. Even if they were animal bones, I would still be a little scared...Strangely enough, I have thought about what could be buried in my backyard  because one time I did find a bone, but I'm pretty sure it was just one that my dog buried (haha).

  • Report it and see how old the bone is

No I don't think what is buried under my backyard

  • I would have taken the bones to a local mesuem or to a specialist who knows a lot about bones and history.

I have wondered what was buried in my backyard and like 4 years ago a couple friends and I started to dig a hold behind a shed in my backyard and we didn't find much but old rocks and dirt.

I was interested in this story and would have liked to hear more about it

  • If I would have found something as cool as this buried in my backyard, I probably would either keep it or donate it to a museum or something. I haven't ever really thought about what could be buried in my backyard, because I don't really care.

  • I think it would be really cool to find something very interesting like this when we live so close. Ive thought about it but really took the thought much further . It would be fun to dig up an area just to see what you would find.

  • 1) I would have either given them to the police or I would have called someone to ask what I should do with the bones. And my last option would to give them to a hospital to see what they could do with them.

    2) I have never thought about what could be buried in my backyard until now and it kind of makes me curious about that so I don't know what to think now.
