4 Day School Week

Would you rather have longer days but less days, or shorter days with more days? That’s the question that many schools have been asking themselves at the start of this school year. One school in Independence Missouri starts their school weeks on tuesdays. But they aren’t alone in this 4 day school week, lots of schools have started doing a 4 day school week instead of 5 days. But it does come at a price. These schools are doing longer school days as opposed to an 8 hour school day with a 5 day school week.

There are definitely some benefits of a 4 day school week. Think about it, your school week is shorter. This means that you have one day less of homework, of classes, of school overall. And if you do have homework, this gives you an extra day to do it without having the extra stress of doing it during the school day. This also benefits the teachers, it can be a selling point for teachers who are on the fence about going to teach somewhere. And in a world where we are currently in a teacher shortage, schools need teachers. So why not help the teachers and the students by going to a 4 day school week.

Now we already know what a 5 day school week looks like, 7 hour days of 5 days. But what are some benefits of a 5 day school week? Some studies have shown that after having a 4 day school week for a couple of years, some students have had problems with their progress in learning. Versus students who have maintained a 5 day school week have kept up with their learning progress. Doing this can also affect the elementary students in the school. By having a 4 day school week the elementary student’s sleep schedules can get messed up. And by doing this, they can be tired during the 4 days they are in school. But when asking the parents they overwhelmingly said they preferred the 4 day school week. So… Which would you rather have??

I would rather do a 5 day school week with shorter days. By doing a 4 day week kids aren’t getting as much learning out of it. And why would we go to school not to learn. If we’re going to spend years of our lives doing something I would rather it be productive. Another reason I would rather do a 5 day school week is it keeps it consistent. I like to have a schedule and stick to that. And by having a 4 day school week half of our time would be doing things that could hurt the 4 days we are in school.

Which would you want, 4 day school weeks or 5 days?

Would you rather have Mondays or Fridays off if Harlan went to a 4 day school week?

What would you do on your day off if you had a 4 day school week?

    • I agree with you, being at school for a longer period of time would be very tiring. And if you think further about it, what about sports. If school had to go later then there would be no time for sports after school. This means we don't get to play sports.

  • I agree with the 5 day school plan because the school day in a 4 day school week would be way to long. No one really looks forward to school days in general because their already very slow. So, for the day to be almost 2 hours longer will just create more frustration. I also think it's better to have more time after the school to complete any homework or studying.

  • i would rather have a 4 day school week because in that one day off i could keep on task with my homework. if we had a 4 day week i would like to have Friday's off because i feel like Friday's are fun to like just hangout with my family and friends.

  • I like the 5 day school week. You get more learning in, and, as long as you are on task, you can get all your homework done at a resonably rate. Plus, we get longer winter and summer breaks if we do 5 days of school, compared to shorter breaks with the 4 days of school. If we had to do 4 days of school, I would use the first day off to get everything done, then spend the rest of the break relaxing, and not ahving to worry about homework.

  • I would rather have 4 day school weeks. If we could have 4 day weeks I would want to have monday off. If we had a 4 day week then I would hangout with my friends more and sleep in more. Also since I play club volleyball in the winter and sometimes we have tournaments on Saturday and Sunday having an extra day to rest would be nice.

    • That is a good point, but that doesn't leave a lot of time for after school sports. By the time we get out of school in a 4 day school week it would be about 5. Then school sports would ge4t out about 7, this doesn't leave a lot of time for homework.

  • Although we are already in the 5-day schedule I think it would be fun to see what a 4-day schedule would look like. I feel I would be more awake on a Tuesday rather than a Monday and we have an extra day to do homework. However, the longer school days might be a challenge for some people.

  • I would rather have 5 days because its what I'm used to. Also, in order to have the same amount of learning in a 4 day school week, the school day has to be longer and I really don't want that. Plus, soccer already has to start practice an hour after we get out of school. If you add 2 more hours onto the school day, I'm not getting home until 8:00 something.

  • In my opinion, I would prefer a 4 day week of school because I would look forward more for the weekend and have more time to have fun and do homework. Even though it could mess up people's schedules, I would like to see how it would work for a week. I would prefer getting Mondays off because I already  Fridays, but there's nothing worse than Mondays. If I had an extra day of the weekend, I would probably get my homework done and relax.

    • A 4 day school week would be nice because you could have the weekends off. But personally I would feel more stress during those 4 days that we were in school. I would rather spread out the days that I was stressed, but that is just me personally.
