-Explain what people did for entertainment in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

-Define the Progressive Era and why it started(goals). 

Start of making America better for the people. Protecting Social Welfare-cleaned up workplaces, Promoting Moral Improvement-18th amendment to rid manufacturing of alcohol, Creating Economic Reform-Journalist were one of most important in this time by letting people know about problems, Fostering Efficiency- 1890-1920

-What is prohibition? Why did people want prohibition to come about? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?

-Describe the impact aid organizations had on our country.

-What did the 18th Amendment do and why did people want it?

Prohibited the manufacturing of alcohol, Because many men wouldn't come home and if they did were drunk, beat the wives. 

-What is socialism? How was it started in the United States?

-What/who were muckrakers and what impact did they have on our country?

The people that gathered information for the news papers and gave everyone information. Exposing the society of the bad things. They changed the way people saw things.

-What did local government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era?

-What did businesses do to bring better efficiency to their business?

They used scientific management to find the most efficient way. Limited most workers to a 10 hour day

-What did the progressives do to make the workplace safer?

-What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor?

Keateing-Owen Act- prohibited child-labored good transport across states 

 -What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work?

-What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers?

-What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?

-What did the 17th Amendment do? 

To allow for popular vote for the people. Deals with U.S Senators 

Section 9.2

-Describe the major social changes that affected women during the Progressive Era.

Voting Rights, Real paying jobs, Divorce, Higher education 

-Describe women's push for suffrage(voting) and the passing of the 19th Amendment.

Passed in 1920 Woman's right to vote, Felt unequal to men, African-American men got to vote, They didn't get to vote, They would do marches and stand in front of White House, Parades, Writing letters to president. Went state to state

-Describe some women who were leaders in the push for suffrage and temperance.


Elizabeth Cady Stanton-Founder, Susan B. Anthony-Role Model, Jane Addams-Helper

-Describe the major accomplishments of Teddy Roosevelt as President.

Meat inspection Act-, Pure Food and Drug Act, Conservationist

-Square Deal

Formed by three basic ideas, Wanted every person have a chance. Abolished Slavery and involuntary servitude in the Philippine Islands. Work days were only 8 hours 

-Breaking up strikes

-Regulating railroads

-Regulating food and drugs

Food and drug act- Prohibited the sale of contaminated foods. Labels had to have the ingredients on them, must do thural cleaning of equipment each day. 

-Conservation

Newlands Reclamation Act(1902) Antiquities Act of 1906

-Policy towards African-Americans

They were given equal rights, They were able to do a lot more.

-Describe the major accomplishments and problems of William Howard Taft's presidency

Helped make the exonomy much stronger, but lacked presidential views, Very uncertain presidant

-Payne-Aldrich Tariff 

Payne bill- lowered rates on imported manufactured goods. Aldrich Bill- fewer cuts, increased rates. Payne-Aldrich Bill- Moderated high- rates of the Aldrich.  Raised rates, a high tariff, Helped big businesses.

-Land disputes

Richard A. Ballinger removed 1 million acres of forest and mining land

-Breaking up trusts

Taft was more aggressive towards Anti- trust Act. Caused uncertainty in Taft's decisions . Rule of Reason- if a company grew large through unfair or unreasonable practices, would be broken up. 

-16th Amendment

Allowed for congress to levy income taxes without basing it on the state or census. 

-Policy towards African-Americans

Taft gave little attention. Given little relief in the south. Some were still treated poorly, reason for moving to the north. 

-Break-up of the Republican Party

Split into republicans and the new Progressive side. Caused Democrats to get House of Representative; first in 18 years

-Describe the outcome of the 1912 Presidential Election.

Candidates were Wilson, Roosevelt, Taft, Debs. Wilson won the election. He was the favored one.
