Ch. 9.1

-Define the Progressive Era and why it started(goals). reform the way the politics treated prople. Middle class people werent happy with the way they lived. goals: better working conditions and paying workers more. Definition making america better for the people 1890-1920

-What is prohibition? Why did people want prohibition to come about? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition? making alcohol illegal

 it wasn't doing anything good it was just doing bad. 

-Describe the impact aid organizations had on our country.

-What did the 18th Amendment do and why did people want it? prohibited the manufacturing of alcohol

-What is socialism? How was it started in the United States? 

-What/who were muckrakers and what impact did they have on our country? investigative journalist - they changed how people saw things, helped get laws pasted

-What did local government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era? 

-What did businesses do to bring better efficiency to their business? 

-What did the progressives do to make the workplace safer?

-What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor? 

 -What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work?

-What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers?

-What did progressives do to make our country more democratic? 

-What did the 17th Amendment do? for people being able to popular vote someone out of office

 

Ch. 9.2

-Describe the major social changes that affected women during the Progressive Era. able to vote and get jobs able to get divorce from husbands. Higher education

-Describe women's push for suffrage(voting) and the passing of the 19th Amendment.  Woman being able to vote 1920

-Describe some women who were leaders in the push for suffrage and temperance. Felt unequal to men, mostly white women.  a lot of parades in front of white horse

 

Ch. 9.3

-Describe the major accomplishments of Teddy Roosevelt as President.   very productive  passed the federal employers liability act 1908 

-Square Deal abolished slavery in philipines island, Eight hours should comstitute a days labor 

-Breaking up strikes 

-Regulating railroads 

-Regulating food and drugs prohibited the sale of contaminated foods, food had to have labels on their box of the ingrediente

-Conservation Newlands reclamation act set aside land for natural parks, took care of nature

-Policy towards African-Americans giving somewhat equal rights but there was still segergation, they were able to do more than before

 

Ch.9.4

-Describe the major accomplishments and problems of William Howard Taft's presidency - helped the economy much stronger. didn't know how to present himself

breaking up big trusts

-Payne-Aldrich Tariff -  lowered rates on imported manufactures goods, fewer cuts but increased rates, moderated high-rates of the aldrich. TARIFF - tax on imported goods..   

-Land disputes -  removed 1 million acres of westward conservationist reserved forest and mining land

-Breaking up trusts - Taft was more agressive toward ant-trust act , "Rule of Reason" if a company grew large through unfair or unreasonable practices

-16th Amendment - allowed congress to levy income taxes without basing it on the state or census. income tax 1913

-Policy towards African-Americans - taft gave very little attention, given little relief in south, some were still treated poorly, reason for moving to the north

-Break-up of the Republican Party - rossevelt chose to make his own party 

-Describe the outcome of the 1912 Presidential Election.
