CAUSES OF STOCK MARKET CRASH

  • Stock prices were greatly inflated and didn’t have real value due to watered stock

  • Over speculation also led to watered stock which caused the crash

  • Buying on Margin and credit led to the crash

  • Overproduction of goods

  • Uneven distribution of wealth

  • Too much borrowing from banks to buy stock

  • Federal reserve increased interest rates

  • Lack of government regulation in the stock market

CAUSES OF GREAT DEPRESSION

  • Overproduction of goods

  • Underconsumption of goods

  • Agriculture slump due to the overproduction of crops

  • Tariff policies of 1920’s were very strict

  • Taxes benefited only the rich- Rich get richer poor get poorer

2. Understand the impact the stock market crash and Great Depression had on the country and world as well as on the lives of people in the United States.

EFFECTS OF STOCK MARKET CRASH

  • Investors and business lost millions of dollars

  • Thousands of banks fail savings are cleaned out

  • Businesses cut production and lay off workers

  • Unemployment rate rises and people quit spending money

  • The Great depression sets in and spreads to europe and other parts of the world

EFFECTS OF GREAT DEPRESSION

  • Bigger government involvement due to New Deal programs

  • Deficit spending starts

  • The New Deal creates many programs that are still around today EX. social security, welfare

  • Fascist, military and communist leaders come to power throughout the world EX. Mussolini, Hitler

  • Vicious depression cycle: Companies lose money-->They lay people off-->unemployment rises-->less people buy goods because income has dropped-->companies lose more money and close or lay more people off. Repeat cycle
