Stock Market

Stock prices were inflated did not have real value/watered stock, People Over speculating/overvalued stock

Overproduction of goods, farmers making too much, companies had too much product, companies weren't making money

There was an uneven distribution of wealth/ income inequality

Too much borrowing from banks, Banks made it easy to take out a loan/ allowed people to buy on credit

-Federal reserve increased interest rates, helped lead to the crash

Lack of government regulation on stock market

Great Depression

High protective tariff policies of the 1920s, cut world trade

taxes benefiting the rich, rich got richer poor got poorer

caused factories to get shut down, people lived in hoovervilles; small shanties made of cardboard and blankets, Bread lines were for white men to go get food for their families, Men would work for the money to pay for the food at night, segregation of blacks,









3. Understand what the United States government did to help alleviate the problems the Great Depression brought to our country.

Herbert Hoover- Federal Farm Board, Norris La Guardia act strengthened labor unions, Deported Mexicans from US to Mexico,

What New Deal Programs did to help, and who- -

-CCC- Civilian Conservation Corps- Passed in 1933, one hundred days, CCC members worked 40 hours a week paid 30, 25 dollars sent home to family, members lived in camps, lived under military discipline, Planted trees fought forest fires, stopped soil erosion, construct military bases during WWII, Bank Holiday close the banks for a day

 

-FSA- Granted small farmers money to purchase items, the dust bowl forced a lot of farmers off their farms, Many farrmers bought tractors with money from the AAA thus forcing tenant farmers off the land, The FSA provided relief to these people, wanted to document the struggles of the farmers,

 

- AAA- Restricted production during the New Deal by paying farmers to reduce the amount of crops planted, Its purpose was to reduce crop surplus so prices would go up, 6 million pigs were killed, farmer blockades

 

-Tennessee Valley Authority- -TVA- Created to generate electric power and control floods in Tennessee River Valley Area,, The agency still exists, some criticized the TVA for only helping a specific region not the whole country,

Pearl Harbor lead US into the War- Japan’s attack on US in Hawaii, Tried to knock the US out of the war,

Atomic bombs- Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Enola Gay, fat man, little boy

D-Day- Allied invasion of the coast of France, 5 different beaches,

Battle of the bulge- Axis/Hitler’s last push to get to the sea against the Allied forces,

North Invaded South and we wanted to contain communism, North Backed by Soviet and China, South Backed by US and NATO/UN,

Vietnam War- US fighting Vietcong, wanted to stop the spread of communism, Geneva Conference, Ho Chi Minh, Escalation, VietCong, Guerrilla Warfare, Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, President Lyndon Johnson, General William Westmoreland, Tet offensive, Pentagon Papers Operation Rolling Thunder, Ho Chi Minh Trail, Agent Orange, Napalm, My Lai Massacre, Vietnam War Protesters, Kent St University Protest Massacre, President Richard Nixon, Vietnamization, Paris Peace Accords,

Ho Chi Minh- well educated(in France), dressed as a peasant, after WW2 Vietnam was split into north and south,

Southern leader was Mgo Dinh Diem, Northern leader was Ho Chi Minh, Diem was assassinated, US fighting South Vietnamese Army/Vietcong, Guerrilla Warfare- Retreating and fighting, Escalation- 5 presidents dealt with Vietnam war, small steps, President Truman sent aid to French to fight Communism, President Johnson  got US majorly involved in Vietnam, De-Escalation- Gulf of Tonkin- Several Ships were supposedly attacked by North Vietnamese torpedoes in the Gulf of Tonkin, Tonkin Resolution gave Johnson power to take all necessary measures to assist South Vietnam,

Mid 1960s Tet Offensive- Massive offensive on every city in the south, Massive victory for US, war became unpopular after Tet Offensive, people thought govt was lieing about the war, Pentagon Papers- Talked about how the govt mislead people, Nixon elected, promised to end the war, Operation Rolling Thunder- Started bombing Laos and Cambodia along with the Ho Chi Minh trail,

My Lai Massacre March- 504 Vietnamese  were killed by US soldiers, women raped and people were mutilated, College Protests, Ending of the War- Nixon called for pulling out of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh Trail- jungle trail, went through Laos and Cambodia

War Powers Act 1973- Limits the power of

Unpopular war

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution- US ships were shot with torpedos

Guerrilla warfare  

Geneva conference Vietnam was separated into northern and southern at 17th parallel, set up to unify the country by 1956 elections were never held because neither side wanted to lose

Agent orange sprayed orange chemicals that kills the forest

 

9. Understand the causes and effects of , 9-11 and the War on Terror, Iraq,

9/11- global war on terrorism, put US economy in a predicament

Afghanistan- Let Osama and the al-qaeda group station in Afghanistan,

Iraq- was believed to have weapons of mass destruction,  Saddam Hussein- Leader of Iraq during the 1970s-90s, Gassed the Kurds,
