  • The US Constitution was created in 1789. 
  • We didn't start off as a Democracy but as Articles of Confederation; every state is it's own little country.
  • Separation of Powers is made into the branches to make sure there wouldn't be a dictator and a king.
  • Checks and Balances make sure that the other branches are not abusing their powers.
  • Father of the Constitution is James Madison.
  • House of Representatives and Senate.
  • There are 100 senators which are distributed as 2 per state.
  • There are 435 representatives in the House of Representatives. - Determined by the population of the state.
  • President - 4 Years for one term -- Can serve up to 10 in rare cases.
  • Representatives are 2 year terms. - Can run at age 25.
  • Senators are 2 year terms - Can run at age 30.
  • Congress powers; declare wars, pass laws
  • FDR served for 12 years during the Great Depression and WW2.
  • Qualifications in the US Supreme Court: none
  • Supreme Court members are appointed by the president. (they die, get sick, or get impeached to leave.)
  • Supreme Court Powers: veto
  • Current Chief Justice: John Roberts appointed in 2005 by President Bush

Thursday - Over the Indian-China Map. Yesterday that man that killed the American Sniper, Chris Kyle, was convicted guilty. The man tried to plead insanity, but is sentenced to a live in prison with no parole .. And this man also killed Kyle's friend too.

Constitution:

  • The supreme law of the constitution
  • Foundation and source of legal government, separates powers, balances, and creates a place to govern
  • Provides the framework for our country
  • Written because of the Articles of Confederation that failed terribly ... So got rid of it and made the Constitution
  • Popular Sovereignty - government power resides in the power
  • Limited Government - not all powerful
  • Separation of Powers - Helps prevent one branch from being too powerful/Checks and Balances
  • Federalism - division of power among federal and state governments
  • James Madison wrote the Constitution

  • Preamble, Articles (establish government), and then the Amendments (protects rights)
  • Article 1: Legislative Branch
    • Bicameral:
      • Senate
        • 2 senators per state
      • House of Representatives
        • Based on population
    • Reps serve for 2 year terms
    • Senators serve or 6 year terms
    • Important Powers:
      • Make laws
      • Set taxes
      • Declare wars
      • Override veto
      • Borrow money
      • Regulate international and national trade
      • Print money
  • Article 2: Executive Branch and Cabinet
      • President and Vice
      • Both 4 year terms
      • 35-year-old
      • 14-year resident of the US
      • Natural born citizen
    • Elected by the Electoral College
    • Important Powers
      • Commander-in-Chief of the US Military
      • Grant pardons
      • Make treaties
      • Appoint federal officers
      • Ensure laws are executed
      • Executive Orders
  • Electoral College System - If you get so many more votes you would get the entire state's vote.
  • Article 2, Section 4
    • Impeachment - the President, Vice President, and Supreme Court Justices, and all civil officers of the U.S. shall be removed for conviction of treason, bribery, or other high crimes, or misdemeanors
    • Clinton and Johnson were impeached -- neither were kicked out
    • Nixon resigned
