Al Qaeda

Group: Megan Andersen and Alexis Irlbeck

1988- After the years of supporting the Afghan mujaheddin, Osama bin Laden and some of his top associates meet in a suburb of Peshawar, Pakistan. With the soviet forces withdrawing from Afghanistan the idea of global jihad suddenly seemed possible, and the al Qaeda, (base is born). “We used to call the training camp al Qaeda,” bin laden recalled. “And the name stayed.”

1991-1998

Bin laden moved his base of operations to Sudan, that is where he forges links with militants across the middle East and North Africa who plays a role in a lot of terrorist attacks, including the 1993 bombing of World Trade center. In Feb, 1998, after being expelled from Sudan and returning to Afghanistan, he issues a fatwa against the US embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, which killed 224 people

Oct 7, 2001- The US and British forces attacked Afghanistan after the Taliban regime fails to produce bin laden, who is accused of masterminding the 9/11 attacks. Within months, the bulk of Al Qaeda has been driven into Pakistan, where all the organization reconstitutes itself and it proceeds to play a role in the bombings from Bali in 2002 to Madrid in 2004 to London in 2005.

Opinion: I think that Al Qaeda got blamed for more than one terrorist attack because of Osama Bin Laden as their leader. It's terrible to think that there are terrorist groups like this one out their. They could be planning on attacking anytime and we wouldn't know it, that is just scary to think about.  What has the world come to? It's mind blowing that people think this way!

  • Well done Megan! I do think you could have expanded a bit more in places overall however.
