Monday- Continued working on the "Song Project", EC- Civil Rights Movement

Tuesday- Continued working on the "Song Project"

Wednesday- Continued working on the "Song Project", learned about the Berlin Crisis

BC- Germany was split into 4 different zones: French, Britain, US, Soviet (same with the capital Berlin)

BC- 1948: French, Britain, and US were united by the Marshall Plan, West wanted the East to rejoin. Stalin tried to gain control of West Berlin which was deep inside the eastern sector

BC- Stalin cut road, rail, and canal links from West Berlin to East Berlin, hoping to starve it into submission. The West responded by airlifting in the necessary supplies to allow West Berlin to survive. May 1949: Russia admitted defeat and lifted the blockade.

Thursday- Started to watch the videos and discuss the topics of the "Song Project". First up was the Red Scare/McCarthyism, and after that was Berlin Blockade.

RS/MC- 1947-1957, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg trial (found guilty of spying for the Soviets-executed in 1953)

RS/MC- The Iron Curtain surrounding Eastern Europe, USSR detonating their atomic bomb-1949, China becoming communists, Korean War started in 1950-Domino Effect, Stalin's actions in Germany-Berlin Blockade

Chiang Kai Shek vs Mao Zedong

Chiang Kai Shek- leader of China (anti-communist), flees to Taiwan after communists win Civil War

China Civil War- 1928-1937 (paused to ban together during WW2) Civil War starts again- 1946-1950

Mao Zedong and the communists win

Taiwan was recognized as China until 1972

Nixon visited China in 1972-Detente (China became closer to the US unlike Soviets (very glad that China and USSR butted heads))

Alien Registration Act (Smith Act)- illegal to talk about overthrowing the US government, Required all non-citzen adult redisents to register with the government, 215 people were indicted under the legislation including alleged communists/anarchists/fascists, prosecutions under the continued until the Supreme Court.

RS/MC- Joseph McCarthy (1908-1957) was a republican Senator from Wisconsin, gave a speech where he claimed to have a list of 205 communists in the State Department (no one saw the names on the list and the news of the list spread panic throughout the country), became one of the most powerful people in the country.

Supporters of McCarthy- Republicans, Catholics, Conservative Protestants, Blue-collar workers, Joseph and Robert Kennedy

McCarthy's Downfall- October 1953 investigate "communist infiltration into the military", Eisenhower realized that McCarthy's movement needed to be stopped, 1954-Senate censured him, McCarthy died three years later (Joe Must Go)

McCarthyism- accusing someone/something without evidence

HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee)- 945-1975, organization that went after directors and actors in Hollywood, committee believed that films were spreading communist propaganda, investigations in the movie industry, Hollywood Ten, each man was found guilty and sentenced to spend a year in prison and pay a $1000 fine, Blacklisted (most went under a different name/went to act in a different country) (Ex. Charlie Chaplin)

Friday- Continued watching the Cold War videos with the Cuban Missile Crisis and Berlin Wall.

Bay of Pigs- April 1961, Fidel Castro and his missionaries taken over Cuba and becomes friends with USSR

BP- Fidel Castro ruled Cuba from 1950-2011, took over Cuba in the late 1950s

BP- Anti-Castro Cubans were trained by the CIA, and the Cubans were the ones that went in to take down Castro

BP Goals- take down Castro, reestablish democracy (make it look like the Cubans wanted to do this)

CMC- October 1962, Cubans were concerned that US would re-invade the country

BW- 1961, built a wall in order to keep the people from moving towards the West side. Soviets didn't want to build this wall at first, Soviets thought that everyone would chose them at first, but the people started to move towards the West side. Soviets wanted to keep everyone in. Had to go through checkpoints in order to get to the other side (Ex. Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie)

BW- Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down This Wall speech in June 1987

BW- Everyone gave Pres Reagan the credit of the Wall coming down, however the Pres that was in office when the Wall came down was H.W. Bush. Berlin Wall Come Down in November 9, 1989.
