In 1993 a car bomb went off in the parking garage of the world trade center. The explosion created a hole 200 feet by 100 feet, and was several stories deep. It killed six people and injured more than 1,000 people. An estimated 50,000 people were evacuated.
Six suspects were convicted of participation in the bombing. On October 4, 1993 the trials began for four of the defendants Salameh, Nidal Ayyad, Mahmud Abouhalima, and Ahmad Ajaj. February 7, 1995 Ramzi Ahmed is captured by the FBI he is credited for being the mastermind behind the bombing. After being sentenced for life in prison he tells the court I am a terrorist and I am proud of it.
There is still a seventh member of the group at large and the State Department is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his arrest. After the bombing it is ruled that there should not be public access to the parking garage below the world trade center.
