Worlds larges Cyber Attack takes place over weekend

I international cyber attack took place over the weekend affecting multiple countries. Ransomware is the biggest cyber attack in history and it's not over yet. Ransomeware works by locking people out of there computers and the only way to get back in is to pay by bitcoin. Once you pay the ransom the bitcoins go to the hackers. If you don't pay the ransom within a specific time, you are permanently locked out of your computer and all the files on the computer are released and deleted. The virus has affected over 200,000 people in 150 different countries.

Questions-

What do you think the punishment for this crime for this should be?

What would you do if the virus attacked your computer?

Response-

I think that the hackers that did this should have life in prison since this is a international crime that has affected hundreds of thousands of people. As far as what I would do if my computer was attacked, I would most likely pay the ransom then once this is all solved, see if I can get my money back.

    • I think that there is no way you would be able to get your money back from the hackers, so I wouldn't pay it. I agree they should go to prison for a long time for a huge international crime.

  • I think that the hackers should have to pay a lot of money to the people involved and they should go to jail. I think I would just let the computer get attacked. I don't have anything that important on my computer anyway.

    • If it was my school computer especially, I think I would just let it go. I don't have anything important on here and the school could handle it better than me, so if I saw it, I would just take my computer battery out and wait until it was safe to turn it back on.

    • I agree that the hackers should have to return the ransom money they were given and then go to some type of incarceration. I also don't have much on my computer so I see why letting it get hacked would be fine for you.

  • Our technology is very complicated today, but not too complicated. We should treat hacking just like we treat other things. No stealing, leaking of information, etc. Cyber attacks are also very weird. Sometimes you need a hacker, to catch a hacker. I would be devastated if my computer got hacked because it has so much information.

  • I think that there should be a very BIG sum of money to be paid for this, because something like this is not cool. I would not pay the ransom, because i don't think that i should have to pay to get onto my computer. I would try to get help from a tech specialist to see if there is another way.

    • I agree with you when you say that there should be a big fine but I think there should also be jail time served, possibly for life. I disagree with you when you say that you wouldn't pay the ransom, I don't think a tech specialist can solve it if the top ones are already working on the case. Thanks for the comment!

  • I think that this should be treated as an act of cyber war and the hackers should be treated like wise. If this attacked my computer I would go to the police immediatly and hope they can find the source of the attacks.

    • I agree with you but I don't think this is an act of war, I do think they should be punished though, I think they should serve life in prison. I also agree with you when you say you would go to the police, but then I would most likely pay the ransom. Thanks for the comment!

    • I think the more we can help police, the better. Cyber attacks are planned out and very well thought through. You also have to be very smart to pull something like this off. Finding the source of the attack is very hard. After that, they have to figure out who actually did it where is when things can get tricky.
