Will we have a White Christmas this year..

Have you ever wondered why we have not had a white Christmas in the last couple of years?? over the past three decades, meteorologists are referring the winter weather as normal or avarage. This data was updated this year and from 1991 to 2020, the climate crisis is to blame for the milder and less snowy weather. On December 25th the National Oceanic and Atmospherica Admimistration (NOAA) scientists show the chances of snow would be about 1in. Here is a map showing what they figure we should be reciving in our area on Christmas.

Historical chance of a white Christmas
darker blues have a 10 to 50%
lighter blues have a 50 to 100%

North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin has a 90% higher chance of having a white Christmas. Also areas of the West around the cold mountains have a higher chance of show on Christmas. NOAA's data does not show where the probabilities have changed on the map above. 2,000 locations have never had a white Christmas accouding to CNN. from 1981 to 2010, the previouse 30yr average, 64% of those locations have less of a chance for snow on Christmas. 31% of the stations increased only leaving 4% staying the same.

Lindsey wrights that " The spatial fingerprints of climate change that we'd expect based on our modeling studies are visible in national patterns of change in temperature and precipitation normals." The small differences between 1981-2020 and the 1991-2020 version of the map is consistent with the long-term warming. Lindsey also adds that on Christmas the observation of 1in snow in any year will vary widely because of the patterns from the weather.

Do you think we will have a white Christmas this year?

Do you think that this is caused by the climate changes?

  • Well done Presten!! So glad you got this done and done well!

  • I don't think we will have a white Christmas. Although I do enjoy them, our weather has been very bipolar, so the weather can be unpredictable. I do think that global warming has some play into this. Because our earth's temperature is increasing, so are all these bad things.

  • I do not think that we will have a white Christmas this year because the weather has been really off and on. I would also prefer if we did not have snow because all it does is cause problems on the roads and make everything harder.

  • I don't think we will have a white Christmas this year, as much as some of us were hoping for at least a little bit of snow, the weather has been and shows to continue to be to warm. I believe that it is up to climate change that this is happening. Look at last year, the temperatures were very severe, to the point where you couldn't go outside for a certain amount of time, and look at this year, just yesterday we were in the 70's in the middle of December.

  • I don't believe we will be having a white Christmas this year, as based on the weather currently and it only being a little more than a week away I doubt we will get much if any snow this year. However, if we do end up getting snow this year that'll be a sight to behold. This is most likely caused by climate change in that it hasn't really felt like winter until the past few weeks, which I guess is ok considering it's still technically fall but oh well.

  • Christmas is only 9 days away so I do not think that we will have a white Christmas this year. With all of this abnormal weather I doubt that in nine days there will be enough actual snow on the ground to call it a white christmas. This isn't climate change though as temperatures are still freezing.

  • Sadly, I do not think we wil have a white Christmas. With the increase in tempature as years go on, our chances of a white Christmas gets lower and lower. Although it would be super nice to have a white Christmas it is hard to tell or ever know.

  • In my opinion I dont think that we will have a white christmas because like what you said it is most likely to be blamed on the climate crisis. Yes I think that it is caused by climate changes because its happening all over the world warming up and cooling down in some places but we act like its not going to affect us but like you said in the past few decades we havent had much snow and I do think that that is caused by the climate change.

  • I don't think that we will have a white christmas this year. It will probably snow an inch or two a week before christmas and then it will warm up again and melt everything away so it's just crappy. I think were just going through a couple years without snow kind of like our droughs we have in the summer.

  • I don't know if we will have a white christmas this year or not because it's already December 16, and we've really only had one snow fall and the snow lasted all of like 20 some hours. I belive that the warmer winters we've experienced have been caused by global warming and that we need to do what we can to stop and or lower it.
