What is happening with malls?

Malls have been a popular hang out place among teens since the 1960's.  That was only four years after Victor Gruen made a model of what a mall would look like and had the first one built. By 1975 shopping malls contributed to 33% of retail businesses' money. By 1992 malls were at their peak of popularity and the malls were contributing to over half of the money retail businesses were making. So when did it all go wrong? Because, malls are starting to shut down because businesses/retailers are not getting the money they need to keep the doors open. It all started to become less popular in 2008 when online shopping websites started to get more popular. So when people started to shop online the businesses inside the malls don't have money the mall tends to try to find other businesses to move in. Since a lot of businesses are switching to online or just going bankrupt the malls do not have the money to keep their doors open. But why is that? It could be the fact that when everyone was in lock down for covid 19 and businesses were making more money online, or it could be that the businesses were drowning in debt trying to keep there doors open.  A lot of businesses switched to online during covid in the hope they might make more money because they don't have to pay the mall to be there and because businesses were on lock down.

What do you think would help malls to get more people to shop there?

When was the last time you went to a mall?

Do you think malls should stay open and why?

  • I love your topic choice! I would like to see your summary a bit longer and be sure to use paragraphs to help separate info and make it easier to read. Also be sure to continue replying throughout the week.

  • I think that if they had a more wide variety of stores that people are interested in now instead of  the 2000s would help them. The last time I went to a mall was around 4-5 months ago. I think they should stay open because they are a nice place to get all of your day's shopping done. And then some.

  • I think online shopping has increased because of convenience, and it is easier to place an order than to find time to go to the mall. People may also choose to shop online rather than go to the mall because online there may be more items available. I think the biggest downfall to online shopping is not being able to try clothes on before purchasing them.

  • I think more people in today's world would rather shop online than actually go into stores and go shopping. I usually online shop more often then go into stores most of the time, but I will occasionally go to malls or stores.

  • i feel if malls get better stores then people might think about going to a mall to shop. i belive it was december of last year i went to the jordan creek mall in Des Moines. i belive malls should stay open because they have alot of stores and you dont have to walk along time to get to one.

  • People usually shop online these days. There are still many people that love going to the mall to go have fun with friends. I love going to malls when I have the money. Being able to walk around with your friends like you're in a random teenage movie with all of the bags from different stores would be fun.

  • The last time I went to a mall was probably Jordens creek last summer. Other ways I do not go to malls often or I just never go to a mall. I think that there should be like 1 big mall or a couple of smaller malls so then people won’t have to drive too far to go to a mall. I don't really mind malls that much but they are a long way from where I live.

  • I personally love going to malls. Even if there is more variety online, I enjoy shopping in person so much more. Malls are fun to walk through and you can go from store to store while you decide what to buy rather than drive to a bunch of different buildings. A lot of malls have gone downhill and are less fun to go to because of that. I think nostalgia is a very persuasive force that could potentially revive malls, but I don't know if malls will ever be as popular as they once were.

  • More advertisement would be beneficial to the malls and the stores in the malls. This would be the best way to get more customers in the malls. I don't think that they will ever be as popular as they used to be just due to online shopping and stores that are out on their own.

  • I think more advertisement and expanding there places in the mall would be the best way to get more people. I doubt malls will ever get popular again because everyone just goes to a normal store or online. I think malls should most likely just shut down.
