What Defines a Sport?

What does wrestling, tennis, football and many other activities all have in common? They are all known as sports. According to the Oxford Dictionary sports meaning, “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or a team competes against another or others for entertainment.” But what about esports, dance, marching band, and cheerleading?

Many people don’t think that those things are sports. I remember many debates with people that dance is a sport. Personally, I think those activities are sports. All those activities I listed do qualify to the Oxford Dictionary.

Why do people think these things arn’t sports? Some of them do not have as much competition “to qualify” as a sport. For example, cheer is not all competition. But cheer fits the definition. Another reason is people don’t think esports are athletic. But the Oxford Dictionary doesn’t say it has to be athletic.

In conclusion, many people have different thoughts about what defines a sport. It gets pretty debated. But honestly I don’t think it should be worth a fight.

Do you agree or disagree with the definition of sports?

Do you think that those things are sports?

What sports are you in?

  • I agree with the definition of what a sport is for the most part. Most people completely disregard cheerleaders and don't consider it to be a sport, but it involves a lot of work and practice time. We are literally throwing people into the air and catching them, and the student section would be really bored without us. I'm in football and wrestling cheerleading.

    • I agree with you. Many people think that being in cheer isn't a sport, just because your cheering on the football players. But you girls do way more stuff than just cheering.

  • I think that if you are on a team, you compete, and you use some form of physical activity, then whatever it is should be considered sports. Dance schools are some of the hardest schools to get into. I show choir they have to run laps around the school and then dance and sing at the same time for around 2 hours and most don't consider them a sport but it should be considered a sport. I think that there is nothing wrong with the definition of sports. All activities that meet the requirements should be considered a spot. I am in golf.

    • I agree with you! I did show choir in 7th grade and it is not very easy.

  • Defining what is a sport gets a lot of attention because they don't have games or it isn't a physical game or competition. I think that it can be metal too and not just physical. I agree with the definition that oxford dictionary gives to sports.
