Wastewater Tells Tales

A research project was done on two town's sewages in Kentucky, and they found surprising results. They tested the water for certain ingredients in drugs like cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, several opiods and ecstasy. If an individual needs to dispose of drugs, the place that they do such actions is through the process of flushing the drug down the toilet. Testing the wastewater is a good tracker to finding drug abusers. The research project found that there were higher levels of drug use in the water on days like the Fourth of July than on a typical day. They actually found out that on Independence Day the levels doubled in one and upped by half in the other town. On the day of the eclipse the researchers found about 1,450 milligrams of drugs per the 1,000 people in the populated towns. That is enough to get 2.9% of the people high in the towns.

Q1. How would you feel if researchers anylaized our town's wastewater and came out with a shocking percentage of drug abuse? Would you be surprised?

A. I would actually be pretty intrigued in what the number would be. I dont know much of harlan or try to associate with drugs, but I would genuinely be curious.

Q2. Did it even cross your mind that drugs could be tracked through the wastewater?

A. It didn't cross my mind that there are other ways of telling where the drug is being abused. As much as I would like to say I knew about it for common sense reasons, I connot take credit.

  • Super job!!

  • I wouldn't be necessarily surprised since as time goes on drugs become more popular. Yes, drugs are known to be flushed down the toilet (as i've seen in tv shows and research) and since wastewater is still viable the drugs are still trackable.

  • Yes and no, there are many drugs in Harlan than mosot people think. No its never cross my mind that there is drugs in the wastewater. I would think flushing the drugs would be one of there last resorts.

  • 1. Yes and no, there are more drugs in Harlan than people expect. But yes I would be surprised because why would they put drugs into the water system?? It makes no sense to me. It is bad for people and the community.

    2. No, I don't just think about drugs so it never crossed my mind that people would put drugs into the water system

  • I would be very surprised but very grossed out because we drink that water and so do all of the kids living in that town drinking that water is not very healthy and can probably cause some diseases. No, I really wouldn't have thought about it because I don't think of drugs like most people do. By them tracking them like this only means law enforcement has come down hard on drugs.

  • I wouldn't be surprised, but I think that's a really cool way to find out how many drugs are being used. Drugs being tracked through wastewater didn't occur to me but now that I think about it, it works.

  • I would freak out because I drink that water. I would make sure I drank bottled water from now on and try to stop the drug abuse. I guess I never thought about it but it makes sense. I'm going to be more cautious now.

  • I wouldn't be suprised. Some people are smart with hiding their 'stash' in places. This seems like a thing that should have been known for a while. It does cross my mind honestly. I don't know why if it doesn't for others.

  • No I would not be surprised at all I totally belive that there is plenty of people that abbuse drugs secretly and do it without anyone knowing, especially all teenagers that might do drugs.

  • I would be amused but not shocked. I was totally unaware of the idea but yeah it does make sense since most drug tests are by peeing in a cup. I am not quite sure if I want to know everyone's buisness though.
