U.S. Senate Passes Hong Kong Bill

On November 19th the US Senate passed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act which was made to challenge the current Chinese government to promote democracy and civil rights for Hong Kong’s inhabitants. As the protests rage on after the death of a 22 year old protester and the siege of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the US has begun to intervene. With this new bill the president can set sanctions and travel bans in those who carried out the detention or forced confession of any Hong Kong citizens. This bill will be passed to the House of Representatives then sent towards Trump for a final review. After the many complaints of the Chinese government infringing on Hong Kong’s protected freedom. While this bill seems to be a good start it has been met with complaints and anger from the Chinese government who state that the US government does not have accurate facts and that this bill would be infringing on their rights more than anything else. Hopefully this bill is a step in the right direction. To read more go here.

  1. Do you think this bill was right to be passed unanimously within the senate? Do you agree that the U.S. should intervene?
    1. I think that this bill is a good start towards a change for China. After keeping up with the protests so far it is good that the US has begun to realize that the Hong Kong protests do need attention and help.
  2. If you were a Chinese citizen living in Hong Kong would you be for this bill? Would you openly join the ongoing protests even with the danger?
    1. I would be all for having an outside force help with protesting the oppressive government. If I lived in Hong Kong I think that I would definitely join the protests no matter how dangerous they ares
