Transgender minors in Iowa

Ryland Kelting is the first of two children I'd like to share with you. Ryland Kelting is a young boy in Waukee Iowa who has taken a special take on gender. He and his family consider him to be gender creative this is because whereas yes, he identifies as a boy, he loves all things girly and often wears girls’ clothing, paints his nails, and wears make-up. The second is boy named Bryan Brown. Whose family excepting him has brought him from a shy and angry young girl, to a happy and outgoing boy. His mother even stated, “She has never seen her child as happy as he was this year,” (USA today). In Iowa there are laws to protect them from discrimination in education, public accommodations, and housing. However, teens and others still report having struggles with accepting family members, prejudice at school and the lack of health care services stated- local advances. However, there are groups like “The Family Leader” who are from Iowa who are against acceptance and stand for conversion therapy, people who are trans and gay. However, Iowa has passed a bill against conversion therapy.

Will there ever be a day when transgenders or people of the LGBTQ community will be considered the same as a white cis-mail?

I personally don't know if there will ever be a day when people of the LBGTQ community will be considered equal. Yes, I do hope for said day when people who are outside of the “normal” will be excepted but if there are people who can't excepted people who are outside of what they consider to be normal I don't think it will happen.

Do you know what negative affect Conversion Therapy have on people?

For starters the fact that people call for it is outrages, and it's even more so that people think it works although it's been discounted by every mainstream medical and mental health organization for decades. It also has a track record of being unreliable. It can also cause or even worsen depression, anxiety, and self-destructive behavior, self-hatred.

Do you believe/think that transgender and LGBTQ should have health insurance and equal rights?

I strongly believe that people of the LGBTQ community do infant deserve equal rights. Denying people who have a certain sexual preference or gender identity rights that everyone else has is like treating people with hazel eyes differently than people with green eyes. It's stupid.

Do you believe/think that conversion surgeries and HRT should be covered by insurance

yes, yes I do.

  • This is a model of how forum post leadership should be done! Great topic choice, grea summary and a great job replying!

  • Yes there definately will come a time when all who live will be equal. It may not be for a really really long time but it will happen. You cant change someone but you can brainwash them and tell them that their feelings are wrong, however I don't know what kind of person in the right mind would do so. Equality for all no one on this planet deserves less. Depending on your financial situation if you are under age you should get it free or reduced and if you are an adult that can support his/her self then they should have to pay full price.

    • I'm glad that you think that, and where as I hope for this day to come I feel that a lot will have to change. To brainwash people into those feelings is the point of conversion therapy. As to what kind of person in their right mind would do such a thing? The simple answer is that those who believe in conversion therapy are not in their right minds. Equality for all is exactly what this world needs. I think that’s a great hawser to how people should pay for hormones and the surgery. Not only does it help provide for people, but it also doesn't rely entirely on tax payers to pay for it. It's a middle ground that doesn’t leave either side unsatisfied.

  • I think that LGTB's should be treated equal and shouldn't have too take that class and that the surgerys should be free because its what they want or they really feel confident about it. The Theropy might trigger some depression or worse maybe even suiside. I think they should be treated equal no matter if their not "normal" that's not a right thing too do.

    • Yes, people in the LGBT community should be treated equally. Whereas yes many feel the surgery should be free that leaves the problem of who would pay for that. And the answer is the tax payers, and this leaves many people unsatisfied. I personally feel that 4AlanahW. (the comment above yours) has an exhalent answer to this problem. The problem with the therapy isn't that it might trigger depression or worse things, it's that it does cause them and is extremely immoral and ineffective. I agree with you that people of the LGBTQ community should be treated equally even if they don't fit into the social norm.

  • 1. I want to believe that yes, that one day labels will not be necessary, and we can live without continually explaining or demonstrating who we are, but I also believe that for that day there is still a lot.

    2. Yes, I have read a lot about this type of therapy, and it is horrible, the consequences of these therapies force you to repress your own nature, besides that, the risk of you ending up committing suicide is very high.

    3. Obviously, a person from the LGTBQ + collective is no less than any other person and the same rights should be given.

    4. In my opinion I think that all health should be free, but I do not have a very clear opinion on whether it should cost money or not change sex.
    • I can agree with you. I too wish for a day when people don't have to explain themselves to people and be put through a lot and must prove themselves; however, there are several hurtles that we as a whole in society need to get past in order for this to happen. I agree with you on the fact that conversion therapy is horrible, and I'm happy that you've done your won research. In my opinion it ranks among the list of worst things to ever leave the state of thought and to then be used on people. I agree with you 100% on the fact that the LGBT community is no less than anyone else and deserves rights. Ahh healthcare, several countries over in Europe have it free and for everyone. I too think that health care should be free. And it's understandable not knowing weather gender reassignment should be a free surgery. I personally believe that it should be for the person to save up some money to help pay for it but that insurance should help cover it.

  • I think in a few years people will learn to accept the LBGTQ but they will still get judged. So many people have came out so I think it'll get normal. I think a lot of people get bullied so they suffer from depression and many more harmful affects. I think they should be covered since people can't control who they are. I can see how people don't think it's nesscary because there's nothing wrong with them but it affects people differently.

    • As much as I wish for a day where people of the LGBTQ community to be treated equal as long as there are people who think that they are wrong for whatever reason they won't be. The thing with so many people coming out is by now you would think that people would realize that people of the LGBTQ community are just people. People who just want to be treated equally; however, that isn't the case. So, I’m not sure if you mean "shouldn't" or if you honestly meant "should". Also, do you know what Conversion therapy is? Do you honestly feel that people should go through this process that is extremely damaging not only mentally but physically? All for what? To be what society calcifies as 'normal' instead of embracing and excepting who they are?

  • Although it is very sad that acceptance is such a hard thing, I do not believe that the LQBTQ+ community will ever truly be treated equally than the average straight person. It's the same with race adn it is incredibly sad. I think that conversion therapy is absolutely horrible and cna be very scarring for the people who endure it. I bleive that everyone deserves equal rights.
