Trading A White Lab Coat For An Apron

The university of Minnesota is now offering cooking classes for those going into healthcare. Their assignment each day is to create a meal to treat their patients' specific health problem. Dr. Kate Shafto and Jenny Breen developed the class to teach future health professionals how to care for their patients and themselves by having healthy meals and good eating habits each day. McKenna Campbell-Potter, a student at the university of Minnesota, had to create a dish that would be good for her patient, Maria, who struggled with her weight and worries about heart disease. McKenna ended up making pan-seared salmon with tzatziki sauce and mashed cauliflower with garlic and herbs. The salmon used healthy fats to add flavor and fill the patient up. And the cauliflower is healthy compared to the mashed potatoes. McKenna learned her own way of cooking to help her patient just like many others at the college. The future health professionals are taking advantage of this class and using it to benefit their future in healthcare.

1. Do you think that college students going into the medical field should be required to take a cooking class?

2. In what ways do you think this would benefit Americans?

Answers:

1. I think that future health professionals should be required to take a cooking class in college. It would help the overall health of patients in hospitals all over. The doctors and nurses would know more about what's best for their patient.

2. I think that this cooking class would benefit Americans by informing them what good eating habits are. Also, I think the time spent in the hospitals by patients would be decreased because of the better nutritional meals and eating habits.

  • Well done overall but you could have commented a few more times.

  • I think its a good idea for people working in hospice or occupaitonal therapists or something. I don't think it should be a required class. I think it would be beneficial in helping people find a diet that they like and helps their body.

  • I don't think College Students who are in the medical filed need to take a cooking class. I think most Doctors would know what we need to limit and what we should consume daily. But I think it could be a good idea to take it. I think it could benefit Americans by eating helathier.

  • Americans are always having struggles with weight, heart disease, and watching what they eat. In reality I feel this would be good for the U.S. because it brings a lot of positives to the community and the economy. Medical fields involve a lot with the body and food is a natural object that is always running through it. I think this is a great idea and could lead to greater things down the road.

  • I think it is a good idea but it probably doesn't need to be required to surgeons but maybe nurses or people to take care of the patients becasue it can help both the health of the patient but also the health of the doctors.

  • I don't believe it should be a requirment because of course there are gonna be those who just can't cook and they shouldn't have to sacrifice there grade for that alone. I also think that it would open up american's minds to new foods and help keep a better health standered while shwoing the importance of keeping a healthy diet.

  • 1. I do not think it should be a requirement, but a possibility and that many students want to take the class.
    2. In the United States there is a serious problem of overweight, so if future generations are educated in a healthy diet I am sure that the problem would be reduced considerably.

  • I don't know if it should be a requirement, but I can see they are doing this. I believe knowing what is good to serve to a patient with a specific problem would help them decide what to prescribe the patients.

  • I think that it would defiantly help the students if they were required to take some sort of food/cooking class, in order to really understand the complexity of foods and the problems/benefits they have. I think this would benefit Americans because it would help them live healthier lives, which is obviously a good thing. Doctors should learn how to help their patients in any way they can!!

  • I think it is good for any college student to take cooking classes, especially when they are going into the medical field and will be learning how to take care of their bodies. The cooking class will just encourage more healthy eating for Americans.
