Teen tackled and pinned by cops at school

Police at a school in Texas are inspecting a brutal and blatantly excessive take down of a sophomore student.

Ixel Perez, a 10th grade girl at Sam Houston High School, was violently tackled to the ground and detained by 3 police officers who worked for the school district. People are thinking, alright what was the crime? Did she have a weapon? Drugs? No, the "crime" she "committed" was using her cellphone during school.

The school has a policy that does not allow cellphones during school time, and if students are caught using them they must pay a fine and the school will keep their phone for a certain amount of time. That rule/policy is acceptable and understandable, but what happened to Perez is beyond going too far. She admits that she refused to give them her phone when they asked for it, but she claims she was on the phone with her mother who suffers from medical conditions. Perez says she was just making sure that her mom was doing okay. She didn't want to give the phone to the teacher because she was scared. Perez was asked to go out into the hallway, where she was confronted by the assistant principle. She tried to walk down the stairs to get away from the assistant principle who had called the cops, and that's when Perez was tackled.

1. Do you think what happened to Ixel Perez was a reasonable punishment? Why or why not? If not, what do you think her punishment should have been?

2. Do you think the school's phone policy is reasonable? Why or why not?

  • Excellent job Perri!!

  • No, she shouldnt of been tackled, but also she shouldn't of been walking away from the principle she could of stopped and talked tell what was going. There are some points of using phone at school and not. Between classes and at lunch and free periods not during classes only if teacher says its ok.

  • To be tackled, arrested, and detained just for having a cellphone out is an good example of police officers and school administrators taking their authority too far. Of course she should have listened at first and put her phone away, but the police should have never been involved in this situation. At the most she should have been fined as was school policy, and maybe a detention to ice the cake.

  • I think that they are going way to far by enforcing a rule about cell phones like that. It is unacceptable that a sophomore should get tackled for something as little as using her cell phone to make sure her mother was alright. At the worst her punishment should have been a detention or something. I don't agree with the rule being enforced in such a way but the rule itself isn't that bad. Sure for some cases like this girl having a phone to contact her mother was needed but, I think that in situations like that the mother and daughter should tell the school that she will need to use her phone to check up on her mother, and work that out with the principal or something.

  • I think that they took their rules too far. There would have to be something more reasonable than tackling a person just for using their phone. Even if schools have different rules, she could have asked to use it, or to finish her message. And what was going on with her mom was obviously more important than breaking the rules.

  • No. Just because someone won't hand over their phone shouldn't mean that you tackle them. I would have asked her what she was doing on her phone and if she would have said talking to her mom who has an illness then I would have let her finish her message or call and then would have just asked her for her phone or just told her to put it away. I think the schools phone policy  is very unreasonable. There is no reason for them to make you pay a fine just for using your phone and then taking it. If it is during class, then sure take it, but I would just tell her to put it away. No teacher or school staff should call the cops just so they could tackle some kid who won't give them her phone. That is just foolish!

  • Spencer- I also think that tackling her just for breaking a stupid phone rule was is very unreasonable!

Periann-  I don't think this was right either! I agree with you, and I would have done the same thing.

Miguel- I agree! The punishment couldn't be a whole lot worse. I don't think they should have to pay a fine either!

Emilio- You're right! She wasn't harming anyone by having her phone out, and she should have just had it taken away or just put it away, not get tackled by the police.

Kelsey- I agree! Times have changed and technology is a big part of our daily lives and we should be able to use our phones more at school.

Tanner- I agree because sometimes there are family emergencies, and you may need to call and check on them.

Christion- That is very true! It's not harming anyone by checking your phone every once and a while. Her mother could have been in danger!

Lyric- I agree! She should not have walked away from the teacher and assistant principal, but she should have told them about her mother.

  • If the school has an issue with phones so be it, that's reasonable. To call the police, that's an over kill. They did not need to tackle her at all. That should only be the case if someone is in harm, no one was anywhere close to being in harms way. Maybe she shouldn't have walked away from the Assistant Principle and told them about her mom before hand but this was way to far.

  • She should not have received any kind of action like that. She shouldn't even be punished at all. Her mother could have been in some kind of trouble what was Perez supposed to wait until school was over. The no phone policy is ridiculous its not like its a danger to be able to look at your phone.

  • I don't  think that is reasonable because if her mom has issues then she needs to check up on her. Also i don't think they need to tackle her. If anything i think that should have to give a detention. I think that you can have your phone at school because there could be an emergency with your family or maybe you don't feel good and need to call your mom.
