Student Dies From Workout

On Saturday April 18, 2015 Ryan Gillyard died during his workout. He was a freshman at North Philadelphia. During the middle of his workout he collapsed on the ground. He was rushed to the hospital but by the time he arrived it was too late. Ryan was always training for football, he was the linebacker for their football team. The school said Ryan was an amazing person and will be making a special day for him at the school.

I think coaches are pushing students to hard at times. He was always practicing and having training with his coach on Saturdays. His death is unknown, but I think his body just couldn't handle it anymore.

Questions: Do you feel like coaches can push their players to hard? Do you feel like high school sports are worth all the training and risks?

  • Good job Skylar!

  • Some coaches do push the players to hard and some not enough this kid may have been pushed to the limit but who knows. Highschool sports are definitely worth it obviously students dont care or they wouldn't be in them.

  • That's horrible. But he maybe had some other personal health issues, like hard or lung problems he wasn't aware of. I think this coach pushed him to hard, but in general I think the training is worth it, as long as the students have fun.

  • I do feel like there is coaches out there that push their players way to far and are to hard on their players. I feel like high school sport do need training, but they don't need so much training that it causes risk for these student athletes.

  • I think that ya sometimes coaches push their players to hard but when your working out on your own time you choose what to do so he could have been pushing himself to far to. Some people take training to far and dont need to train as much as they do.

  • I could be the coaches I think sometimes push people to far.

  • Its not the coaches fault for pushing him to far. If he didn't like the extra effort he would have given up. Its sad the he died and i hope they can find out the cause of the death.

    • Me too! and hopefully its not from being pushed too hard.

  • I think it depends on how much you love the game, like I would do whatever I could to be the best at volleyball but I mean not to the point of death.. It's deffanintly not worth my life. I don't know if i'd say it was his coaches fault but if he wanted the big push..

    • Agreed! I think this is very true! and it his death could have been something totally different from practicing to hard.
