Early on Tuesday, U.S. geological survey states that an earthquake with the magitude of 6.4 hit Puerto Rico. Wanda Vazquez of Puerto Rico Government signed an order for State of emergency, and to activate the National Guard throughout Puerto Rico. The eartquake hit closest to the town of Tallaboa. It is said in this article that there was one death and eight injuries in the city of Ponce, which is located near the epicenter of the earthquake. Due to this there were about collapsed buildings in three different towns, one including a school.  There is about 130 million dollars that has been brought up to help with emergencies.  Rick Scott, the Florida Senator tweeted that 2,300 FEMA staff are over in Puerto Rico to support the recovery efforts. Over 300,000 customers do not have access to potable water, stated Vazques. Our U.S. Coastal Guard are helping to indentify any signs of pollution or damage to the waters. All the ports are open in Puerto Rico are still up and running, stated by the U.S. Coast Guard. For all the people stranded due to the disasters, there are 350 people in shelters.

What would you do if you lived in Puerto Rico and this occured?

If I lived in Puerto Rico and this happened, I think I would make sure my family is safe and leave to somewhere safer.

Knowing ports are open, would you leave before it gets worse or would you stay back and help and why?

I think if I had to opportunity to leave and go somwhere safe, but I think I would stay around and make sure I can help as much as I can.

  • Loryn, be sure to reply on three different days. Also, be sure to make the summary more of your own.

  • 1. Buckle down and hold on.

    2. If I could go somewhere that was more safe than I would try to move myself and my family there as quickly as possible. Problably just go to the mainland in the US.

    • I agree, I would most likely take my family and friends to somewhere more safer. I feel like I would also make sure people around me are safe and I would help them the best that I can. And If  I lived in Puerto Rico I think I would just stay there and move away from the area; I don't think  I would move all the way to the United States.

  • If I lived in puerto rico I would definitely do what you said you would do, I would make sure my family is okay, and maybe my family calls me and makes sure im okay. I would also move to a safer place for the safty of my own family if I had some of my own kids.

I would stay for a little bit to help out and rebuild, but I would move somewhere safer for my own safty.

    •  Yes, I would make sure my friends and family are safe, then I would worry about myself after. I also would think about leaving right away to a much safer place. But part of me would want to stay back and help as many people as I can and make sure they have somewhere to go. After seeing that everyone is okay, I would most likely move to somewhere safer and bring my family and friends with me.

  • If I lived there during this time I would be terrified and unprepared because we never see anything drastic in Iowa. I would want to be safe obviously so I would move before everything is ruined. Like I said I would leave while I could. No matter how much I would want to help people, I don’t even know if I could.

    • I think I would be a little scared and definitely not prepared because we live in Iowa, so none of us have experienced anything like this. Also I can see where you are coming from on leaving while you can. I think part of me would want to leave if I had the chance, but another part of me would want to stay back and help around me the best I can.

  • If I lived in Puerto Rico durring the earthquake I would definately be afraid of what is to come and the chances of there being another earthquake. However, I do not think that the fear would be enough to make me move out of Puerto Rico because it would be hard to just pick up and move away from home to start a new life. But if I happened to live in the part of Puerto Rico with the most wreckage and collapsed buildings I would probably move to somewhere safer within Puerto Rico. I would also move if my house was ruined.

    •  I agree with the fact  that i'd be concerned that another earthquake would occur again and cause more damage than there already is. Another thing  I agree on is that I couldn't just pack up and thing, due to starting a new a life and  leaving the place that I grew up and known my whole life. If I had to leave I would most likely return when I know it is safe again.

  • It would be a horrible experience, since we barely even experience any earthquakes here in Iowa. I would stay back and help because people needs help and for me its hard to watch people suffer.
